Submit Your Interest: ASFS PTA Nominating Committee

The 2021-22 ASFS PTA Executive Board is looking for interested PTA members to serve on the ASFS PTA Nominating Committee. As part of the process to confirm next year's board, the ASFS PTA membership votes to confirm the nominating committee who "shall nominate an eligible person for each office to be filled and report its nominees to the members at a regular general membership meeting at least thirty (30) days prior to the general membership election meeting." The three committee members must be active ASFS PTA members for the 2020-21 school year.

The role includes working with the nominating committee to confirm the six officers for nomination for the 2021-22 ASFS PTA Executive Board at the April ASFS PTA Meeting (4/6/21). Informally, the committee also supports the board with filling the ASFS PTA committee chair and leadership roles for the 2021-22 school year.

If you are interested in serving on the ASFS PTA Nominating Committee, please email Dena Porter by Friday, January 29th. Once the Executive Board confirms the three members for nomination, the ASFS PTA membership will vote at the February PTA meeting (2/9/21). Thank you!

No Place for Hate: Complete Your Family Pledge By Monday, February 1st

ASFS is joining more than 1,600 schools across the nation to become No Place for Hate, an initiative coordinated and supported by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). In order to receive the No Place for Hate designation, schools must show evidence that they have built an inclusive and safe community where all students can thrive, that they empower students, faculty, administration, and families to take a stand against bias and bullying, and that they send a consistent clear, unified message that all students have a place where they belong (find more information here). This initiative is being led by one of our fifth grade teachers, Ms. Aileen Mavity, along with a team of ASFS staff and parents.

To kick start this initiative, each student and staff member is signing the following pledge by creating a "quilt square" that includes the signed pledge and a representation of the member's vision for ASFS as No Place for Hate:
I promise to do my best to treat everyone fairly.
I promise to do my best to be kind to everyone—even if they are not like me.
If I see someone being hurt or bullied, I will tell a teacher.
I will help others to feel safe and happy at school.
I will be part of making my school No Place for Hate.

These pledges are being turned into physical and virtual “quilts” that can be displayed throughout our learning environments as a reminder of our commitment to a stronger community and better world.

We are inviting all of our ASFS families to create one quilt square per family in the hope that you'll begin these challenging discussions at home and commit to this effort with us! Please see this flier for more information on the task and to access additional resources from ADL. Here is the quilt square template as a PDF, and here is a PowerPoint version. Please send your completed square to Kate Merrill by Monday, February 1st. Make sure to include your family name. Here are samples of completed squares: Example 1Example 2
