Wishing all veterans in our ASFS community a very Happy Veteran's Day! We are very grateful for your service.

November 9th-13th is also National School Psychology Week! Thank you to our ASFS Psychologist, Amy Nemeth, for supporting our students and ASFS community.

Principal Notes from Ms. Begley

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM REMINDERS

1.  Be on time.

  • School begins at 8:50 am. Students should be entering the classroom between 8:45 and 8:50 am. Morning announcements are launched promptly at 8:50 am.
  • Students also need to return to the virtual classroom on time after mini-breaks and lunch in order to hear the day’s mini-lessons and directions for independent work.

2.  Be present and ready to learn -- in all ways.

  • Attendance: Use the same criteria for taking your child out of the virtual classroom that you would use for the physical classroom (medical appointments, illness, and family observance of religious holidays).
  • Distractions: Work with your child to remove their personal distractions, especially other electronic devices.
  • An organized and quiet workspace. Students should have the following items in their workspace every day: iPad and charger; Fourth grade folder; Math/ELA journal; sharp pencils with erasers; and a “just-right” book (appropriate for fourth grade reading).
  • Wear headphones: We are quickly learning how ESSENTIAL headphones are if your child is sharing a workspace with other students or you. Everyone in that space must wear headphones to minimize the background noise. The class struggles to hear your fourth grader speak when other people in the same space are not using headphones due to the excessive background noise.
  • iPads: Must be fully-charged at the start of each school day.

3.  Important iPad Maintenance

  • On a regular basis, students should LOG OUT of Teams and then LOG IN.

Is your child’s battery running low quickly each day? If so, they probably have other programs running at the same time as Teams and Canvas. Students must regularly clear their browser! They should tap on safari on the iPad and close the windows they have open. Having too many apps open has a significant impact on how long the battery holds and the student’s ability to load new learning materials.

Save the Date: ASFS Virtual Book Fair - December 7-11th

In case you missed it, ASFS is partnering with Arlington nonprofit Read Early And Daily (READ) to host a virtual Book Fair from December 7-11th!

READ’s mission is ensuring babies and young children have new, quality, culturally relevant books of their own that are mirrors and windows into their everyday lives and communities. The cool and unique way READ operates is that all the revenue earned from book sales goes directly back into its programming to get new, FREE books into the hands of the vulnerable young children it serves here in Arlington.

So, when you buy a book at the book fair, you will be supporting more books for our ASFS library and classrooms, as well as providing new books for young children who need them the most.

Importantly, READ's books are curated for their cultural understanding and diverse and inclusive representation. Learn more how all children benefit reading mirror and window books.
