Save the Date: ASFS Virtual Book Fair - December 7-11th

ASFS is partnering with Arlington nonprofit Read Early And Daily (READ) to host a virtual Book Fair from December 7-11th!

READ’s mission is ensuring babies and young children have new, quality, culturally relevant books of their own that are mirrors and windows into their everyday lives and communities. The cool and unique way READ operates is that all the revenue earned from book sales goes directly back into its programming to get new, FREE books into the hands of the vulnerable young children it serves here in Arlington.

So, when you buy a book at the book fair, you will be supporting more books for our ASFS library and classrooms as well as providing new books for young children who need them the most.

Importantly, READ's books are curated for their cultural understanding and diverse and inclusive representation. Learn more how all children benefit reading mirror and window books.

    Social-Emotional Learning Resources for Families

Ms. Hawthorne and Ms. Proietti, ASFS Counselors

At Arlington Science Focus School, we are always working to ensure that our school is a safe, respectful place where everyone can learn. Each October, we recognize Bullying Prevention Month by teaching lessons using the Second Step Bullying Prevention Program. In the lessons, your child learns specific skills to help stop bullying. Students learn how to:

    • Recognize when bullying is happening
    • Report bullying to a caring adult
    • Refuse to let bullying happen to themselves or others
    • Be a bystander who stands up and is part of the solution to bullying
    • Support someone being bullied by standing up for that person and being kind and inclusive
    • Recognize, report, and refuse cyber bullying when they see or know about it happening

In the Social Emotional Learning section of the ASFS Counseling website are optional resources called Home Links from Second Step you can use to reinforce concepts with your student(s) at home. These Home Links will help you understand what your child is learning about bullying at school. They also give your child another chance to practice skills for handling bullying.

ASFS Website: Social Emotional Learning Page

If you have any questions about the Bullying Prevention Unit or the Second Step program, please contact Ms. Proietti and Ms. Hawthorne. Thank you for helping us make our school a safe, respectful place where everyone can learn.

Support Our School: Book and Food Donations!

Donate Food to the Food Pantry: Arlington Science Focus School is teaming up with Key Elementary to support their already existing food pantry.  Please consider donating canned goods to families that need assistance. If you would like to donate, a bin will be outside the front doors of ASFS from 8:00am-4:00pm Monday through Friday. Anyone that needs assistance will be able to access the food pantry at the Key site and take what is needed.

    • Canned Items in Demand: Vegetables, Protein (mostly beans), Fruit, Whole Meals (i.e. Chef Boyardee, canned pasta)
    • Contact Kristen Jeffreys with questions or other ways to volunteer.

Donate Books to the ASFS Book Cabinet: We need your help to keep our ASFS Book Cabinet stocked. Just a reminder to return books you are finished with or bring any other Kindergarten-5th Grade level book donations to the Returns Bin outside the front doors at ASFS, so that we can continue to provide books for students to read this school year. Thank you!

Support The Clothesline for Arlington Kids

    The Clothesline

Despite back-to-school looking a little different this year, kids are still outgrowing their clothes and shoes! The Clothesline for Arlington Kids is ready to help low-income families keep their kids warm - free of charge. This fall and winter, we expect to provide assistance to over 500 kids. However, we need your support to make this happen! There are many ways you can help:

    • Donate Funds: Your monetary donation helps purchase new underwear and socks as well as cover the regular expenses of our volunteer-run non-profit. Importantly, a recurring donation helps us to plan for future growth in services. Click here to support The Clothesline.
    • Donate Clothing: Your kids' new or used clothes in excellent condition can find a new home with a neighborhood family in need. New criteria and new drop-off locations can be found in this flyer.

Help our neighborhood kids stay warm this fall while giving their families much need support as they face uncertain times. We continue to see an increase in demand for services this fall. Families that need clothing can complete an online form in English or in Spanish.
