APS Distance Learning Tool Kits

Bridget Loft, APS Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning

Now that distance learning is underway, your child will receive a tool kit of content related materials that are meant to support this learning.  Kit contents will vary based on grade level and discipline but generally will include math and science manipulatives and literacy supports for Kindergarten, first and second graders.  (Art and PE equipment will be available in October.)  Pre-K students, students enrolled in Career and Technical Education classes in 6th-8th grade and students with disabilities who receive Orton-Gillingham interventions or who are enrolled in Functional Life Skills or MIPA programs will also receive tool kits targeted toward their specific instructional needs. These kits are meant to support the virtual instruction your child is receiving.

Custom school supply kits were purchased by donors through an online store facilitated by APS.  These kits will be made available to students who are eligible to receive free or reduced lunches. The kits include colored pencils, glue stick, highlighter, paper, pencils, ruler, scissors, sharpener, and markers. School staff will notify parents of students who are eligible to receive these kits.

Middle school families will receive information from their schools regarding when and how to pick up their tool kits and other instructional materials on Monday, September 28th.  Elementary school families will receive information from their schools regarding the date and time to pick up their tool kits.

Please contact your child’s school if you have any questions regarding these tool kits.  Thank you for your ongoing support for your child as we navigate this new distance learning experience together.

Technology Tips and Resources

Charles Harvey, ASFS ITC

From our ASFS ITC Mr. Harvey, see below for important technology resources, troubleshooting links, and how to get assistance with IT and device issues during virtual learning at home:

***NOTE: The Annual APS Acceptable Use Policy for student devices process will begin next week. This year the process will be completed online at home. Parents will be sent instructions on how to complete this process with their student. All online forms should be completed by October 1st.

IMPORTANT: Parents, please do NOT to set or allow students to set passcodes on their iPads. When students lock themselves out of their iPads by setting passcodes and forgetting them, the iPad needs to be returned to Apple to be unlocked. Unfortunately APS is not able to turn this IOS feature off, so the only fix is for students to return their locked iPad and be issued a new one.

Are You Familiar With SEPTA?

SEPTA is Special Education Parent Teacher Association. Arlington SEPTA serves students, families and staff across all of Arlington Public Schools. Why is there a PTA for parents of kids with special needs? Because parents of children with special needs have special needs themselves. Arlington SEPTA has a very active support offering and listserve found here http://www.arlingtonsepta.org/ and does the following:

  • facilitates events and resources relating to special education services and learning differences in the Arlington Public Schools (APS) system and Arlington community.
  • provides a voice of advocacy for the good of our children and families.
  • supports APS teachers and administrators to achieve the best outcomes for students with special needs, including mini-grants for educators.
  • raises awareness and acceptance of disabilities and special needs
  • hosts social events with for special needs families

The Arlington Public Schools’ Parent Resource Center (PRC) and the Arlington Special Education PTA (SEPTA) work together to provide a liaison to each school in the District.

-Liaisons support and encourage the flow of information between each of the schools, the PRC, SEPTA and the community.

-Liaisons serve as points of contact for families interested in connecting with another parent of a child with special needs in individual schools.

SEPTA Survey closes midnight September 20th

Now that we are one week in, SEPTA is asking our members to please fill out this brief survey <https://tinyurl.com/SEPTAVirtualSchoolSurvey> about the start of distance learning for students with disabilities. The information you provide will help to identify early successes, in the hope that they can be replicated, as well as emerging needs, so we can better advocate for improvements.

If I can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at karrie@onyxav.com
