Share Your Photos & Messages: Welcome to 2020-21, ASFS Kudoboard!

As we all adjust to virtual learning this year, we'd love to hear from you. Please keep sharing your feedback, and reach out anytime if you need help or any support. In addition, CCPTA (Arlington County Council of PTAs) is collecting questions to send to APS Superintendent Dr. Duran, our Arlington School Board chair, and the County Board. Please send any questions my way by Tuesday, September 15th to compile for CCPTA. Thank you, and enjoy your weekend! --Dena Porter, ASFS PTA President

A day of remembrance for those that lost their lives, and for all of those that gave their lives. We remember.

Principal Notes from Ms. Begley

Thank you for your Patience

As we complete our first week of virtual learning, we want to thank all of our parents and students for their patience as we have worked through technical challenges. “Hats off” to Mr. Harvey for his responsiveness to get connectivity and support our families. We know there will be hiccups along the way and we are committed to fixing them. 701 iPads were deployed with updated information. Thank you to parents for your support.

Moving Forward with Instruction

Once students have the basic commands and procedures to use Canvas and TEAMs, teachers will begin introducing different applications and small group instruction. Within the next two weeks, we will begin to assess students individually through tools such as Lexia. We wanted to make sure everyone could connect and set norms for technical behavior use this week before we begin small group instruction. You will see greater differentiation for all students beginning next Tuesday.

Please remember Monday’s schedule is part virtual and part small group instruction and art, music, PE/Health, and library. We will continue to take attendance each day. If your child is going to be absent, please leave a message on our attendance line: 703-228-7672. If we do not hear from you and your child is not logged on, you will receive a robo call in the evening.

ASFS Back to School Night - Wednesday, 9/16

Back To School Night – Wednesday, September 16th from 7-8:30pm on TEAMs

Our Back To School Night will be next Wednesday, 9/16 beginning at 7:00pm.  Our virtual format will be the same as we used for the 30 minute Open House.

You will receive a TEAMs invitation, and the PowerPoint presentation will be conducted by the grade level. You can ask questions in the chat section, and the teachers will respond as the question is read. If you would like to have a deeper discussion about a particular item, you can set up a call with your child’s teacher for the next day. Each grade level will have the special education teacher, English language teacher, reading teacher, and Gifted Resource teacher that works with your child’s grade level come into the TEAMs meeting. Science, Library services, Health/PE, art, and music will have a video or link to each area.

Our limit for the number of people on TEAMs is 250, so we can only conduct a meeting one grade level at a time.  There will be 3 sessions for each grade level so you can attend for each of your children. This will be our schedule:

  • 7:00-7:15   WELCOME
  • 7:20-7:40   Session #1
  • 7:45-8:05   Session #2
  • 8:10-8:30   Session #3

 Library Services

Ms. A’Hearn, our librarian, has recorded a video that will be released for Back to School Night and then will be posted on the ASFS webpage so that you can access library books for your child(ren).

If would like to have books from the library, we can begin reserving books and then we will have a pick up day for you to come up books and then return them. Ms. A’Hearn will have a video on the webpage explaining how to reserve books, and we will have our first distribution on Monday, September 21st.

Technology Tips and Resources

Charles Harvey, ASFS ITC

From our ASFS ITC Mr. Harvey, see below for important technology resources, troubleshooting links, and how to get assistance with IT and device issues during virtual learning at home:

IMPORTANT: Parents, please do NOT to set or allow students to set passcodes on their iPads. When students lock themselves out of their iPads by setting passcodes and forgetting them, the iPad needs to be returned to Apple to be unlocked. Unfortunately APS is not able to turn this IOS feature off, so the only fix is for students to return their locked iPad and be issued a new one.

Stop by the ASFS Book Cabinet outside the front doors at ASFS for another way to enjoy free books for students, thanks to your donations. You may return your books, or donate new books in good condition (for Kindergarten-5th Grade) to the Returns Bin, so the books may be sanitized before we restock the cabinet. APS Distance Learning Resources

APS has developed new elementary and secondary guides that provide tips to help you navigate distance learning and to support your student(s) as we begin the new school year. The guides provide information about instruction, social-emotional learning, student expectations, attendance, technical support, and more. APS has also created videos and tutorials to help parents understand how to use learning apps and how best to support your children this upcoming year.
