Greetings from the ASFS PTA

With just one week left in the school year, we'd like to say THANK YOU to so many for their hard work and dedication to supporting our students and community this year! On behalf of the ASFS PTA, wishing our sincere thanks to:

  • Ms. Begley and Ms. Jones - for your leadership and true dedication to ASFS each and every day
  • Ms. Hawthorne, Ms. Proietti, Ms. Versaggi, and Ms. Zelenak - for supporting our students as our school counselors, social worker, and psychologist
  • Ms. Hall - for your amazing support for our teachers & staff, and all you do for our school and community
  • Mr. Harvey - for your dedication as our ASFS ITC, and Harvey Sports during recess!
  • Classroom Teachers - for giving our students the best possible school experience this year, and navigating this unprecedented time of distance learning
  • Specials & Subject Area Teachers - for going above and beyond with so many engaging activities throughout the year, and guiding our children's learning, growth, and development across all areas
  • Custodians, Nurses, & Cafeteria Staff - for all your hard work and support for our school and students all year long
  • Front Office Staff - for all you do for our families and keeping ASFS running smoothly, even during this time apart
  • PTA Officers & Committee Chairs - for volunteering your time and energy to coordinate our many programs and events, and serve as leaders of our PTA
  • 5th Grade Families - for all your support during your time at ASFS. Congratulations to all of our graduates and their families! We will miss you, and hope you will come back to visit ASFS often.
  • ASFS Parents, Guardians, & Students - for your continued flexibility and support, and being part of this special community. ASFS wouldn't be the school it is without our wonderful families!

TODAY! ASFS Virtual Field Day - Friday, June 5th


The ASFS PE Department is happy to present this Virtual Field Day! The event is set up in google slides with videos to explain each of the activities. 

Students can choose to do any or all of the activities that are designed with little to no equipment. It will also be an assignment for students on Seesaw in the Specials area. If students choose, they can share how they did or what they liked via a response video or picture.

This event is JUST FOR FUN! Join in with your child on these easy to do activities.

ASFS Closeout Schedule for Students - June 8th-11th 

As Ms. Begley shared last week, below is the ASFS Closeout Schedule for next week, June 8th-11th, as well as complete details on the ASFS Closeout Procedures for Students, as approved by Zachary Pope, APS Emergency Management Director. If you have questions or concerns, please email Ms. Begley

  • Monday, June 8th - Grade 3: 12:30pm-3:30pm
  • Tuesday, June 9th - Grade 1: 8:30am-11:30am
  • Tuesday, June 9th - Kindergarten: 12:30pm-3:30pm
  • Wednesday, June 10th - Grade 2: 8:30am-11:30am
  • Wednesday, June 10th - Grade 4: 12:30pm-3:30pm **turn in all school owned instruments
  • Thursday, June 11th - Grade 5: 8:30am-12:30pm **turn in instruments/pick up t-shirt and Memory Book 

NOTE: Each parent and child must have a mask on if you get out of your vehicle.


ASFS Summer Reading Challenge

Join Arlington Science Focus School’s Summer Reading Challenge! We are offering two ways for your child to participate in the challenge. Your child can complete either the APS Summer Reading Choice Board, the Arlington Public Library Reading Log, or both. Both challenges with directions are attached to this letter or accessible using the links above. After your child completes one or both challenges, he or she will save their completed Choice Board or Reading Log to receive a prize in the fall. ASFS Garden Volunteers Needed for July 2020

We are looking for volunteers to help out with weeding our ASFS gardens through the month of July!

Click below to sign up for a week at a time to weed the front gardens and raised garden beds by the trailers. Come anytime during your assigned week as it fits into your schedule! A great way to spend time outside and support our school, and all instructions and supplies will be provided. Please contact Stephanie Lin with any questions.

Open 2020-21 ASFS PTA Committee Chair Roles 


Even though school is closed for the year, the ASFS Nominating Committee is looking to recruit Committee Chairs for the 2020-2021 school year! The goal of the Nominating Committee is to enlist the talents of as many ASFS parents and families as possible. The Nominating Committee’s responsibility is to consider all interested persons for a particular positions. 

You can make a difference! The value of volunteering is priceless. Why step up? You will have access to your school community, friendships, camaraderie, and support first rate programs at ASFS.

Online Registration Open & Virtual ASFS Information Session - Monday, 6/8

Online Registration for the 2020-21 School Year is Now Available: Families that need to register students for the 2020-21 school year are now able to register students using the conditional online registration process. 

Virtual ASFS Information Session: Some of the elementary schools that were unable to host their second school information session for parents in April before the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to close will be hosting virtual information sessions for families in June. During these virtual information sessions, attendees will be able to learn more about the school, engage with the school’s principal, and participate in a questions and answers session. Each virtual information session will take approximately 45 minutes to an hour. The sessions will be recorded and posted online for families unable to view the sessions live.

Attention 2020-21 Rising DHMS 6th Grade Families!

To all rising 6th graders attending Dorothy Hamm Middle School for the 2020-21 school year, welcome to the Phoenix Family from the DHMS PTSA! The PTSA has an email weekly newsletter called the Phoenix Post, which is emailed to parents, teachers and staff on Mondays. New Book Donation Drive for Arlington Families

Thanks to a collaborative effort with One More Page Books and Arlington PTAs, support new books for Arlington students at grab-n-go and other school sites with your online donations! One More Page Books will contribute an additional 5 books for every $100 worth of books purchased for this campaign.

APS News & Updates

Arlington School Board Meeting: Watch the video of last night's Arlington School Board meeting (6/4/20) for the latest APS news and updates, including an update on the fall 2020 return to school plans and development of the FY 2021 Capital Improvement Plan.

APS Framework for Reopening SchoolsAt the May 21, 2020 School Board meeting, Interim Superintendent Cintia Johnson presented the initial plans for returning to school. The presentation is available at APS Interim Superintendent Return to School Considerations - Fall 2020. Parents are encouraged to share questions and input via APS Engage.

APS FY 2021 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP): The Arlington School Board is scheduled to take action on the APS FY 2021 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) on June 25th. Complete details are available at: Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for FY 2021 and Future CIPs

Virtual Town Halls with the New Superintendent: The community is invited to a series of virtual town halls to ask New APS Superintendent Dr. Francisco Durán questions and learn a little about him. Community members can submit questions in advance at engage@apsva.us. Details on how to participate will be announced at a later date. Additional virtual town halls are being scheduled for students and staff.
