Greetings from the ASFS PTA

Thank you again to all of our amazing Teachers & Staff on behalf of our ASFS families! As we wrap Teacher Appreciation Week, we cannot thank you enough for all you are doing for our students. We miss you, and cannot wait until we are all back together at ASFS again!

Celebrating our exceptional ASFS teachers and staff this week! Wishing them a wonderful Teachers and Staff Appreciation Week. We cannot thank them enough for all they do, all the time and effort they spend helping our children thrive. Here’s a little way we are show them we thinking of them during this time, and showing them we appreciate them though from afar. Presenting our wonderful teachers and staff at ASFS!

A few simple suggestions as to how we can show our appreciation from afar!

E- CARDS: Electronic greeting cards are a small gesture, but greatly appreciated!

VDOE Thank a TeacherFor the fifth year, the Virginia Lottery is encouraging students, parents and the general public to send thank you notes to Virginia's deserving public school teachers during National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4 – 8. Your favorite teacher could win a Virginia vacation and prizes for your school! Make your favorite teacher smile with a digital thank-you note featuring custom artwork by the three student art contest winners.

E- GIFT CARDS: Gift cards are always a teacher favorite. If you choose to do this, please send directly to the teacher or staff member via email. E-Gift Card ideas:

  • Movie Night In! GooglePlay gift card or any movie streaming gift card. They can’t go to the movies, but you could bring the movies to them, so they could watch at home.
  • Send them dinner! Restaurant food delivery gift card; UberEats, GrubHub, or DoorDash, so teachers may order their favorite meal.
  • Gift cards: Amazon, Target, Walmart, or VISA are always a good idea too!

Any gift card would be appreciated! Please keep in mind the APS Guidelines on Gifts from Families.

USING TECHNOLOGY: Making use of technology is a great way to show appreciation.

  • Send a video! Students can make a THANK YOU VIDEO, and email it to the teacher or staff member.
  • Drawings: Students could draw a picture or make a card and parents could take a photo and send it to the teacher via email. Or use whatever app the teachers use to communicate with parents.
  • Presentations: Older students could also make a PowerPoint, or make a video of reasons they appreciate their teachers.

HEARTFELT IOU from the PTA: Normally the PTA host luncheons during the week of Staff Appreciation. We can’t do it this year, but as soon as things return to normal, the PTA plans to host a luncheon or two!

Feel free to show your appreciation any way you choose! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to oubenadi@icloud.com. Thank you for your continued support!  --Rabia Ismail Oubenadi, ASFS STAFF APPRECIATION CHAIR

Support My Job Bags for Arlington Children in Need

A huge thank you to My Job Bags for supporting our ASFS English Learner (EL) students who will be receiving 'job' bags this spring!

Who will receive these ‘job’ bags? Arlington County children in need who have been identified by schools and/or local organizations. With COVID-19, families are forced to home-school and so many children don’t have items that they need to continue using their imagination, creating, learning and playing.

How can you help?

  • Monetary donations can be made through the following link: My Job Bags GoFundMe. Through bulk purchasing, each bag can be filled for approximately $6.50.
  • Donate items: Have your kiddos donate used Legos and books! School supplies are also welcome. Donations can be dropped off at: 1410 N Herndon St Arlington, VA 22201

Questions? Contact Amanda Sutton

Running Against Racism: 5K Virtual Walk/Run 2020

The COVID crisis has shined a light on the huge disparities and inequities in our nation rooted in institutional racism. People of color are some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Given the urgency of this issue today, we believe it is timely now for our communities to take visible and collective stand against all forms of racism. Challenging Racism's Annual 5K can be a way to do that.

HOW DOES A VIRTUAL 5K WORK?  Runners and walkers may complete their 5K anywhere, anytime by May 16th, with racers encouraged to upload photos to our web and social media pages which is where sponsors will be recognized. Through our shared effort and photos, we can show our solidarity for an inclusive and equitable community.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN! Click for more details: 5K Registration and Sponsorship Details
