PTA Updates: News from the ASFS PTA

ASFS Families, hope you are all staying healthy and safe during this first week of school closure. Please feel free to reach out anytime with questions (not that we'll have all the answers!), and thank you again to our ASFS teachers and staff for supporting our students with home learning over these coming weeks. As APS Interim Superintendent Cintia Johnson shared, "Even from afar, we’re in this together."  --Dena Porter, ASFS PTA President

ASFS Trailers for 2020-21: Proposed ASFS PTA Letter to the Arlington School Board

Even during this uncertain time, we continue to consider the best interests of our ASFS students. With four new trailers confirmed for next year to support our growing enrollment, APS has communicated that they will be placed on the blacktop, which will significantly reduce the outside play space for our students.

With the support of our ASFS community, the ASFS PTA Executive Board would like to send the below letter to the Arlington School Board on behalf of the ASFS PTA to request that APS places the new trailers on the ASFS parking lot, rather than school blacktop as currently planned.

DRAFT ASFS PTA Letter to Arlington School Board (March 2020)

Please take a few minutes to read the draft letter, and reply to Dena Porter with any questions or concerns by the end of day on Wednesday, March 25th. Parents are also welcome and encouraged to contact the School Board directly or email engage@apsva.us with your thoughts and feedback. Thank you for your support!

Volunteers Needed: ASFS Courtyard & Gardens

Even with school closed, spring is arriving quickly, and the ASFS courtyard and gardens need your support to prepare for the warmer weather. If you have free time on your hands and would be willing to help out, please email ASFS Investigation Station teacher, Stephanie Lin, and PTA Grounds Committee lead, Alex James, to volunteer or with any questions. We will make sure to follow CDC recommendations to restrict the number of people on site at one time with at least 6 feet distance. Thank you for keeping ASFS beautiful!

APS COVID-19 Update: Social Distancing

Please Read: The latest APS COVID-19 Update on the importance of social distancing: APS News Release COVID-19 Update: Social Distancing (posted on 3/17/20)

Click here to watch: Special Video Message from APS Interim Superintendent Cintia Johnson (posted on 3/17/20)

The APS COVID-19 web page contains the latest updates and offers a wide range of resources on Learning at Home, Meal Services and updated FAQ.

Social Distancing Reminders:

  • Avoid group gatherings, such as play dates, sleepovers, parties and visiting each other’s homes.
  • Those in need of childcare should limit the number of families involved as much as possible.
  • Get outside, take walks, ride bikes, or go on hikes, but maintain 6 feet of distance between individuals. Limiting germ exposure to your family’s is reasonable practice.
  • Cook meals at home, if possible.
  • Limit visits to stores and restaurants or coffee shops; try to plan grocery store trips during non-peak hours if/when possible.
  • Practice prevention like covering coughs, hand washing and social distancing techniques with children and have them practice among themselves.
  • Remember that there are many safe activities to explore – family game nights, reading books, listening to music, going for walks and spending time outside, checking on a friend and group video chats are a few.

As the weather continues to improve, outdoor gatherings of fewer than 10 are viewed as appropriate at the moment, but social distancing techniques must still be practiced. Teens are included in this group, and activities like bike riding and hiking/walking are viewed as better alternatives to gathering in groups.
