PTA Updates: News from the ASFS PTA

Thank you to everyone who attended ASFS Math Day this week! A special thank you to ASFS Math Coach, Kelly Stephenson, and all the teachers who helped make it such a successful event, and to APS Interim Superintendent, Cintia Johnson, who joined us to kick off the morning and to be interviewed by students on the morning announcements to celebrate Women's History Month!

Check out the new fitness equipment that celebrated its grand opening this week, and thank you for supporting the PTA in order to fund this project that kids will enjoy for years to come!

Thank You for an Amazing 2020 ASFS Auction!

I wanted to send out huge thank you's to everyone in our community for their help and generosity in making this year's ASFS Auction a success!  This event simply could not happen without the tremendous support of our families, teachers, staff and wider community. Thank you to Mary Begley and Barbara Jones, for their leadership, participation and continued support of all school and PTA sponsored events. Thank you to our incredible ASFS Teachers and Staff who have again and again offered their time and talents to make our school what it is today, and generously donated the much-anticipated teacher experiences for our auction, as well as to Jenn Hall for all her support coordinating the teacher experience donations. Thanks also to the ASFS Parents for your Family Donations and hosting Parent Sign-on Parties!

Thank you to our school staff: Teresa Smiraldo, Loren Fuentes Gil, Jacqueline Torres, Stacia Griffin, and Charles Harvey who work tirelessly to ensure the school is running smoothly and that all students have a great year. I especially appreciate all of their help in making copies and getting out all communications (paper and digital) over the last several months to our families regarding the auction! As well as our custodial staff who are the backbone of our school and are always willing to help out and support us with every school function and event: Olga Almengor, Trent Jackson-Lyons, Walter Marin, and Elva Turcios.

And a huge thank you to Dena Porter and Kristi Tsiopanas who passed on their wisdom guided me through this crazy process and of course my incredible Auction Committee who volunteered their time to help plan, prepare and run the auction.  Thank you for your patience as I figured it all out. I appreciate your tireless efforts and enthusiasm to make this a really fun event for all!

Enrichment Class Spring Registration - Opens Sunday, 3/15

Online registration opens Sunday, March 15th! Baroody Camps and the ASFS PTA are excited to offer a variety of after-school enrichment classes for the upcoming Spring 2020 session.

Visit Baroody Camps Enrichment Registration - Spring 2020 for more details and to register for classes beginning Mrch 15th. (Registration will close on Sunday, March 22nd.)

Classes are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons from 3:45-5:00pm beginning April 15th (after spring break). All classes are held onsite at ASFS (with the exception of tennis at the YMCA and basketball at Hayes Park).

Registration Open: Teacher Work Day Camp - Monday, 4/13

With no school for students on Monday, April 13th, if you are looking for child care, or would like a fun option for your child(ren) to spend time with ASFS friends, Baroody Camps is offering a one-day camp to be hosted at Arlington Science Focus School. Kids will spend the day engaged in a variety of programs that will foster children’s development and curiosity in a challenging and structured environment. All classes are held on-site in a familiar setting, at a convenient location, and with lots of fun planned! 2019-20 ASFS Yearbook Orders Due by Friday, 4/3

All ASFS Yearbook orders are due by Friday, April 3rd!

There are two ways to order:

  1. Order Online: ybpay.lifetouch.com (Yearbook ID Code: 13273620)
  2. Return the Paper Order Form with Cash/Check payment (payable to ASFS PTA) to your classroom teacher or ASFS front office.
  • We are not ordering any extra yearbooks, so place your order by Friday, April 3rd to ensure you receive your copy.
  • Yearbooks are $20/each, or choose from packages available with additional options, including Personalization, Current Event Inserts, and Yearbook Stickys.   
  • Autograph Inserts are being provided with each yearbook ordered.
  • All yearbooks will be delivered to ASFS in the spring 2020 to your student’s classroom.

APS Update on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

3/12/20 APS School Talk: APS-Sponsored Non-Essential Events and Trips Canceled

Per new Arlington County guidance for events and public gatherings, Arlington Public Schools is canceling all non-essential APS-sponsored events effective immediately, until further notice. Essential school events will continue in adjusted formats and participation. Additionally, APS is canceling all overnight field trips until further notice.

This decision is part of a coordinated Countywide response to help mitigate and contain the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in our community by reducing the number of occasions when people come together. Canceling non-essential events allows us to limit public gatherings, while also maintaining essential instructional activities, which aligns with the current decision to keep schools open. This situation is changing by the minute, and APS will communicate any decision to close or modify operations in any way to the community through our regular channels as soon as a decision is made.

Essential instructional activities may include day trips to the Outdoor Lab, Extended Day, limited-audience athletic competitions and fine arts performances, as well as events required for certifications or standards of learning.

In response to increasing cases of COVID-19 in the region, the Arlington County Public Health Division’s guidance for events and public gatherings is available here: Arlington County Government COVID-19 webpage. Outside organizations holding non-school-sponsored events and activities in a school facility are expected to follow this guidance.

Additional information on specific school events and activities that are being modified, postponed, or canceled as a result of this notice will be communicated by schools on school websites and in communications to families.

This continues to be a rapidly developing situation, and APS is working with health officials to keep our school community healthy and reduce the possible spread of illness. Extended Day Registration Begins April 1st

The Extended Day Program has adjusted the registration process to make it easier for families based on input received from the community and best practices in other school divisions. Registration runs April 1-15 for returning families, guaranteeing slots for students currently enrolled. Registration for new families begins April 16. APSGo! Triennial Travel Survey

  • ​​APS conducts the APSGo! survey every three years to help guide transportation planning and resource allocation over the next few years and track progress toward our transportation plan goals.
  • The survey is available online in English and Spanish. The survey will be available through midnight until Fri, April 3rd.  Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey in order to better help APS with its transportation planning.
  • For more information on APSGo!, including results from our two previous surveys visit, https://www.apsva.us/aps-go/. Results will be available in Spring 2020.

APS Interim Superintendent's Proposed Needs-Based FY 2021 Budget

At the February 27 School Board Meeting, Interim Superintendent Cintia Johnson presented her proposal for the FY 2021 Arlington Public Schools Budget to fund operations for the 2020-21 school year.

The proposed budget totals $725.9 million, an overall increase of 8.4 percent, as APS prepares to welcome more than 1,100 additional students next fall. More information at https://www.apsva.us/post/arlington-interim-superintendent-proposes-needs-based-fy-2021-budget/
