PTA Updates: News from the ASFS PTA

Thank you, ASFS Families! With so many initiatives already underway to start off 2020, we are grateful to all of you who are able to show your support, whether volunteering your time (especially for STEM Night!), being engaged in the elementary planning process (hope to see many of you at the Public Hearing on Jan. 30th), attending programs and events, and supporting your children at ASFS.

As always, please set aside a few minutes to read through this week's eFF - lots of important information and key updates included. Feel free to reach out with any questions, or to get involved!  --Dena Porter, ASFS PTA President

ASFS Principal Notes from Ms. Begley

Parents, I am reaching out to you to ask for help and support from home.  We are having increasing difficulties with students cleaning up after him/herself in the cafeteria.  As part of our focus on cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control, we ask that you have conversations at home about cleaning up from the school “dinner” table and throwing away all trash.  I am sure that at home, each child is responsible to carry their dishes away and throw out trash and we ask that as you have those dinner conversations to please include discussion about their school cafeteria and being responsible to respect the property.  Thank you for your help.

Your Help Needed! ASFS STEM Night - Wednesday, 2/12

Still Seeking Parent Volunteers for STEM Night!!!

Parents, your help is greatly needed to help make our Family STEM Night a success! Because we have the addition of 10 science experiment stations this year, we are looking for as many volunteers as possible. If you can help with either set-up, greeting, manning the different STEM challenges/stations, and/or clean-up, please click here to sign-up: ASFS STEM Night Volunteer Sign-up, or you can e-mail Ms. Lin. We split up the night into two shifts (6:15-7:15pm and 7:15-8:15pm) so that you have some time to enjoy the STEM night with your child. Thanks so much!

Plastic Water Bottles Needed for STEM Night: In an effort to reduce waste and also save on costs, we are looking for small plastic water bottles (8 oz./12 oz.) to use for one of our STEM Night activities. If you could save them for us, we’d appreciate it! Please bring in any water bottles to Ms. Lin in Investigation Station as soon as you have them so we know how much more we need to get. We will also accept 16 oz. water bottles but prefer the smaller ones.

Mark Your Calendar! Family STEM Night, Wednesday, February 12th (6:30-8:00pm)

Please join us for our annual Family STEM Night on Wednesday, February 12th from 6:30-8:00pm! Some of the highlights of the event include: engineering challenges, coding activities, a simulated mission with the space shuttle simulator, demonstrations from our two First Lego League teams, and more! Our school was awarded a grant from the National PTA this year to help fund additional activities, so we'll be adding some fun science experiment stations as well!

Support ASFS: Box Tops for Education

We're Still a Box Tops School - Get Scanning! ASFS still raises money with Box Tops for Education, but instead of clipping, now you'll be scanning...your store receipt! If you haven't already, please download the Box Tops app on your phone, and select ASFS as your school.  You only have to do that part one time. Do it now!

  • Each time you shop and buy products with the Box Tops symbol on them, you can use the app to scan your store receipt after you shop.  That's all you have to do (the app will count the "digital Box Tops" for you).  You have to scan within 14 days of your purchase.
  • So no more clipping is required.  Of course, if you do still have the old fashioned little pink Box Tops certificates, you should send them in to school ASAP.  I'll be sending in a batch of paper Box Tops at the end of February.
  • It doesn't matter where you shop...Costco, CVS, Safeway, Whole Foods...any time you buy a product with the Box Tops symbol, make sure you scan your receipt with the app.  Look for the symbol on your General Mills cereal, Annie's, Nature Valley, Fiber One, and more.

Please send any questions to Amy Hodges, Box Tops Chair
