ASFS and Food Bus – WE NEED YOU!

ASFS and Food Bus have again partnered this year to reduce food waste and feed the hungry in our community! Each school day we ask the students to collect unopened/unused food that they would otherwise throw in the trash after lunch.  ASFS then donates this food to the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC).

We could use your help – for LESS THAN AN HOUR IN TOTAL: At the end of each school week, a parent volunteer is needed to collect the food from the Food Bus refrigerator, sort it into bins and deliver the food to AFAC. The pick-up and drop off process typically takes less than an hour in total! If you can help, please sign up using this link: https://signup.com/go/YJavMKL

For more information, please email Jackie Java.Thank you in advance for your support!

Outside the Box Day - Wednesday, 12/4: Recyclables & Volunteers Needed

Save the Date: Outside the Box Day – Wednesday, December 4th, 9:00-11:00 am

Please join us for Outside the Box Day on Wednesday, December 4th from 9 – 11 a.m.! We hope you will enjoy watching the students engage in one of the many children's engineering projects that will be taking place at ASFS. The students will be presented with a challenge, the criteria they will need to meet, and the materials they’ll get to work with. Then they’ll brainstorm possible solutions, choose the best one, and execute it. Be especially on the lookout for the children’s incredible problem-solving skills when they run into a problem, and encourage them to find solutions to their obstacles by thinking outside the box! You will be amazed by the children’s creativity!

Parents, please meet in the library at 9 a.m. before being dismissed to the classrooms. At this event, we ask that you not bring siblings as we want you to be able to fully participate with your child and his/her classmates in the classroom. Thank you!

Recyclables and Help Needed for Outside the Box Day

In order for the children to complete their engineering projects on Outside the Box Day, each grade level will need specific recyclables. Please check the attached document to see what your child’s grade level needs, and if you can save other materials on the list for other grade levels, we would greatly appreciate that as well! Please send the recyclables in to your child’s classroom (if they are for that specific grade level) or Investigation Station (if you have materials for multiple grade levels) as soon as you can. It is important for us to know how much we have/how much we still need early on. Thank you for helping to contribute to the success of Outside the Box Day!

Recyclables Needed for Outside the Box Day

We also need help from parent volunteers to sort these recyclables before and after the event is over. If you are able to spare some time to help us out, please click on this link to sign up: Outside the Box Day Volunteer Sign-up

Need Volunteers to Help Take Care of Baby Box Turtles over Breaks

We need your help in taking care of the baby box turtles (currently in Investigation Station) over longer school breaks (Thanksgiving, Winter Break, and Spring Break). If you will not be traveling for any of the breaks, please consider helping us out! Taking care of the box turtles just involves a few steps every day. All supplies and instructions will be provided! Click on this link to sign up: Volunteer to Take Care of ASFS Turtles During Holiday Breaks

Donate Your Old Cell Phone (for school experiences)

Donate Your Old Cell Phone (to be used for Virtual Reality Experiences at School)

Parents, if any of you have old cell phones that are collecting dust because you upgraded to the new phone and thought that the trade-in value was not worth it, we'd love to put your old phones to use at school! We can use those old cell phones in conjunction with VR cardboard viewers to have the students experience virtual reality with an app called Google Expeditions. Expeditions requires devices that have Android 4.4 KitKat or later or Apple® iOS® 9.0 or later. You can wipe your phone before turning it in, or we can do that step for you before we use it. If you still have the charging cable that goes with the phone, we'd love to have that as well. Please turn in all phones (+ chargers) to Ms. Lin in Investigation Station. Thanks! We're excited to bring the students on a new adventure!

APS ParentVUE Reminder: No More Printed Report Cards

Arlington Public Schools has announced that starting now, there will be no more printed report cards.  All report cards will be sent electronically beginning this year.  Report cards will be available through ParentVue, APS’s online tool for monitoring your student’s education.  Fall report cards will be posted on November 22, 2019.  Parents must have activated their account in Parent Vue in order to view their child’s report card.  For the first quarter this year, which ends today, we will send home further instructions on how to receive the report card information.

If you have not activated your ParentVue account, you will need an activation code in order to start an account.  Each parent has an individual code.  Please call the office to receive your code.  For more information on ParentVUE, please visit https://www.apsva.us/family-access-center/.

APS 2020-21 School Year Calendar Survey

Community members are asked to provide input by November 22, 2019 on three proposed drafts by participating in the community survey. For a general description of the three draft options and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), visit www.apsva.us/engage/school-year-2020-21-calendar/. Calendar recommendations will be presented to the School Board for approval in January.

APS News: Elementary School Planning for 2021-22

In 2021, APS is projected to welcome more than 30,000 students, and will open a new elementary school and add high school seats. On Wed, Oct. 30, APS shared proposals for moving some elementary schools as a first step in a countywide elementary school planning and boundary process for the 2021-22 school year. Community engagement regarding the proposed school moves begins now and continues through January 2020.

There are several ways to get up to speed on this process, the challenges that APS faces, and these proposals to move schools:

Please participate in a Questionnaire (English/Spanish) on these proposals at APS Engage, available through November 24, 2019. These proposals may be revised as APS gathers ideas and suggestions from community members before School Board action on Feb. 6, 2020. Any changes made would take effect in Sept. 2021. To learn more, visit www.apsva.us/engage/planning-for-2020-elementary-school-boundary-process/.

Send questions via engage@apsva.us or Twitter at #APSPlans2021.

Be sure to check out the ASFS PTA APS Updates page, which includes important information regarding the proposals and key dates for the Elementary School Boundary Process.

PTA Parent Education Night on Vaping: Tuesday, 11/19

Arlington County Public Schools are committed to ensuring that our students, parents, community, and staff, are provided with education about the dangers of vaping. According to the CDC, each day ~2,000 kids under 18 start using tobacco products. Electronic cigarettes, or vapes, have become one of the most popular methods to utilize tobacco products in the past few years. These dangerous devices have become popular because of strategic marketing directed at youth. The devices are easy to conceal and the chemical vapor, often fruity and sweet, dissipates rapidly.

Join us for a FREE PTA Parent Education Night on Tues. Nov. 19th from 6:30-8:00pm at Arlington Traditional School (ATS, 855 N. Edison St., Arlington, VA 22205). We invite all parents, as well as 4th/5th grade students to attend with their parents. REGISTER to attend: https://tinyurl.com/NoVaping
