PTA Updates: News from the ASFS PTA

Thanks to everyone who attended our ASFS grade-level parent coffee events over the last couple weeks, and thank you to the ASFS staff and teachers for providing an overview of the upcoming year and answering parent questions!

If you missed the first issue of the ASFS Electric News, take a few minutes to read through below. With lots of news and information from all of our ASFS teachers and staff across grade levels and special areas, this bi-monthly news letter is a great way to learn more about the ASFS curriculum and many programs our school supports.

Last Chance! ASFS Teacher Work Day Camp - Monday, 10/14

Still time to register! If you are looking for child care on Monday, October 14th or would like a fun option for your child(ren) to spend time with ASFS friends this Columbus Day, Baroody Camps is offering a one-day camp to be hosted at Arlington Science Focus School on Monday, October 14th.

Kids will spend the day engaged in a variety of programs that will foster children’s development and curiosity in a challenging and structured environment. All classes are held on-site in a familiar setting, at a convenient location, and with lots of fun planned! Core camp hours are 9:00am-3:00pm with before and after care available.

ASFS 5th Grade Back to School Picnic - Thursday, October 17th from 4:30-6:30pm at Rocky Run Park (1109 N. Barton St.)

The start of the new school year is a great time to reconnect with friends and meet new families. Come join other fifth grade families to meet and mingle while the kids play. Pizza will be provided. ASFS 4th Grade Fall Picnic - Friday, October 18th from 5:00-7:00pm at Rocky Run Park (1109 N. Barton St.)

ASFS 4th Grade Families, mark your calendar to celebrate the start of the year with fellow 4th grade families! Please bring a dish to share with others:

  • Last Name between A-G: Bring a main dish*
  • Last Name between H-L: Bring a dessert*
  • Last Name between M-Q: Bring cold drinks (water, juice, etc.)
  • Last Name between R-Z: Bring a side dish*

ASFS School Picture Day - Friday, October 18th

ASFS School Picture Day is coming up next Friday, October 18th! All students will be photographed for the yearbook. Class pictures are only taken on October 18th. If your child is absent, rest assured they can attend make-up picture day (Friday, November 8th) however they will not be included in the class picture.

If you choose to order a school picture package kindly do so by Friday, October 18th Midnight. Order via one of the following methods:

  • Online at mylifetouch.com
    • Online orders will receive a free Shutterfly photo album and child's drawstring backpack,
    • "LifeTouch Rewards" program - Providing LifeTouch is the photography company used by schools serving your children, the reward program applies across elementary, middle and high schools!!  Sign up online.
  • At school:  Send with your child the order form and payment (exact cash or check) by October 18thIf your child is absent, don't worry, make-up pictures will be held on Friday, November 8th (individual photos only).

ASFS Silver Diner Family Night - Wednesday, 10/23

Mark your calendars for ASFS Silver Diner Family Night - coming up on Wednesday, October 23rd from 5:00-8:00pm! Bring your whole family, invite your friends, and come dine at the Clarendon Silver Diner for a fun family event with our ASFS community! Located at 3200 Wilson Blvd, the Clarendon Silver Diner is very close to ASFS with plenty of parking and walkable from the Clarendon Metro Station. ASFS will receive a portion of sales to support our school - hope to see you there!

Volunteers Needed for Parent-Teacher Conference Day Meals

The PTA will be providing dinner and breakfast on Parent-Teacher Conference Days! The teachers will be working late on Thursday night, and starting early on Friday morning with back to back conferences. Providing dinner and breakfast makes the task a bit easier for our hard working teachers. 

Your help is needed! If you are able to contribute, please sign up using the link below. All contributions need to be dropped off in the staff lounge by 3pm on Thursday, 10/24 and 7am on Friday, 10/25. Perishables may be left in the refrigerator labeled “for Staff Meals." Feel free to drop off contributions the day before.

ASFS Tree Trunk Sculpture Event - Monday, 10/28

We are thrilled to host renowned Chainsaw Carver, Andrew Mallon, on Monday, October 28th at ASFS to create a brand-new sculpture from the tree trunk in front of our school. The students will enjoy learning about the process and observing the project as part of this special event to create art and celebrate school spirit.

Stay tuned for details about a livestream link to watch Andrew's work in action on the 28th, and thank you to ASFS ITC, Mr. Harvey, and Art Teacher, Ms. Garfield, for supporting this project and making it a special experience for all of our students!

Andrew Mallon is a full time Chainsaw Carver working out of Northern Virginia.  Andrew is an APS graduate and began chainsaw carving in 2012. After 15 years as a professional carpenter, he left the field to follow his passion. ​​Learn more about Andrew Mallon and see samples of his chainsaw art on his website: amsculptures.com

Prima Ballerina Viktoria Tereshkina Visits ASFS

ASFS students across all grade levels enjoyed a visit from renowned prima ballerina, Viktoria Tereshkina, on Wednesday, October 9th, as part of her trip to DC while she is performing at the Kennedy Center with the famous Mariinsky Ballet. ​​​​​Thanks to ASFS parent, Melis Varban, for coordinating this special event for our school!

ASFS Yearbook Helpers Needed

Do you enjoy taking photos? Do you attend classroom events, field trips, and other school activities?

We are looking for parent volunteers to take photos for the annual ASFS Yearbook. Very little extra time required if you are already attending school events! If you might be interested in taking pictures to support Ms. Caven, ASFS Yearbook Lead, send an email to Dena Porter to join the ASFS Yearbook team. Thank you!

Odyssey of the Mind Interest Forms due Saturday, 10/12

Odyssey of the Mind Interest Forms are due this Saturday, October 12th!

Calling all those interested in joining the creative problem-solving competition that teaches students from kindergarten through college CREATIVITY with the use the Arts, STEM, Critical Thinking and Teamwork as tools to think beyond the box! 

Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem-solving program that engages students in their learning by allowing their ideas to come to life in an exciting, productive environment. It allows them to learn how to evaluate ideas, work with budgets and deadlines, and improves their communication skills. It also increases their self-esteem and confidence, and develops their critical thinking skills. If interested in being a Contestant, a Coach, a Judge and/or a Volunteer, this is the time to sign-up! 

Please note Volunteer Coaches and Judges will be trained! The number of teams we have is limited by the number of volunteers we have. The competition will be held on March 14, 2020.

Reminder: New APS Volunteer Process

Reminder to all ASFS Volunteers and Chaperones, please complete the new APS Volunteer Process! The new APS Volunteer Process Application is required for field trip chaperones as well as any parent volunteers at ASFS. 

A few key reminders:

  • Everyone must complete the new process this year, even if you were approved through the old system last year.
  • However, you may not need to complete the SafeSchools Training again. The training is good for two years; Stacia Griffin will confirm whether it's required once you submit your application.
  • You also need to be registered in the Visitor Management System to be considered an approved volunteer.  Please bring your ID to the front office next time you go to ASFS (and every time you arrive!) to register in the system.

Big Build at the National Building Museum - Sat, 10/12

The Big Build at the National Building Museum is this Saturday, October 12th 10am-5pm, FREE for all ages. Build, discover, play, make, climb, and design alongside architects, hobbyists, artisans, and crafts people. All Museum exhibitions are open and free to the public on this day. Participate in activities including:

  • Virtual and augmented reality in the new Tech Lab
  • Decorative arts, woodworking, spackling, nail driving, and brick laying
  • Story time with author of BRICK Who Found Herself in Architecture
  • Lounge for Museum members to take a break and recharge
  • Much more!

International Children's Festival - Monday, 10/14

Everyone is invited to Culturfied’s International Children’s Festival. This ADMISSION-FREE festival is an interactive and educational event where Culturfied collaborates with Washington’s embassies to provide DC’s youngest residents with an amazing showcase of culture, tradition, and heritage.

Last year, every child was provided with a mock passport photo and passport book to have stamped at more than 20 embassy booths which displayed geography, attire, arts and crafts, food samples and a host of other fun activities. This year, there will be over 30 participating embassies and we are expecting over 10,000 attendees!

APS Outdoor Lab Open House: Sunday, October 20th

Friends and families, come out to the Arlington Outdoor Lab for our Fall 2019 Community Open House. It is scheduled for Sunday, October 20th from 12:00-4:00pm. We will have activities including: boating, fishing, cookout, hiking and the visits to the animal lab.  Check the Outdoor Lab website in case of inclement weather (rain date will be Oct. 27th.) Hope to see you there!

National PTA Reflections Contest - Entries Due 10/29

Calling all ASFS student artists! There are less than three weeks left to enter the Reflections Contest sponsored by the National PTA. The theme for this year’s contest is “Look Within." Entries are due (along with the completed student packet) to the submission box in the ASFS Library by Tuesday, October 29th. Contact Noosha Tayebi or Andrew Losos with questions.
