Support Hands-On Learning

Pollinators, Streams, and Tadpoles -- Oh My!

Many kids learn best by doing. The ASFS PTA supports hands-on learning environments for our children by providing a stream, pond, aquariums, and a variety of gardens (native plants, sensory, pollinator, and vegetables). These environments directly support our curriculum, including many of the science standards of learning (SOLs) under the strands:

  • Scientific Investigation, Reasoning, and Logic
  • Life Processes
  • Living Systems

Over the years, our PTA has built these great learning resources. If we value them we need to continue to invest in them.

How can you help?

You can support hands-on learning and maintain these resources by volunteering with our grounds committee and/or by donating to our PTA in three easy ways:

  1. Online: asfspta.com/donate
  2. Complete our form and return to the office with cash or check (payable to ASFS PTA)
  3. In-person at upcoming PTA meetings or parent coffees (cash, check, or credit card)

All donations will receive an email receipt. Donations to the ASFS PTA are 100% tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law. Many companies will match charitable donations; be sure to ask your employer.

Yes! I want to support hands-on learning!

Thank You, Hanover Research Volunteers!

Thank you to Hanover Research who supported ASFS on Thursday, October 3rd as part of their annual Volunteer Week! A group of 30 volunteers helped with projects in our school courtyard, beautified the blacktop with new paint, and sanded the playground railings. We are so grateful for our ASFS partnerships, and very appreciative of Hanover's support for our school!

Parents/Guardians: Are you registered to volunteer at ASFS this year?

It's as easy as 1-2-3! See the ASFS Parent Registration Information Flyer for details:

  1. Have you completed the new Annual Online Verification Process? This new system replaces the First Day Packet students previously received on the first day of school.  Your completion of the AOVP is vital for updating and maintaining accurate student information for our students. This new process utilizes ParentVUE, the online tool that families can use to track the latest information regarding their students. With online verification, families will now be able to update information for each of their students through their ParentVUE account at the start of school.  If you haven’t done it yet, please do so by October 31.  And if you need help, just call the ASFS office at 703-228-7670 - we’re always here to help.
  2. Have you been registered for the ASFS building? This is another new system this year.  All parents and guardians must be registered at the main office with their official ID—a driver’s license or other governmental ID is the most common.  Come into the main office and Ms. Fuentes will register you with your ID.  Once you are registered, when you come to school you can sign in with your ID at the kiosk in the front office and get a personalized nametag.  Anyone coming into the school must stop and get a nametag.  Just remember your ID every time you come in, and you’ll be all set!
  3. Have you signed up online to volunteer/chaperone this year? Finally, there is a new process for signing up to volunteer or chaperone.  All volunteers, even if they filled out paperwork in previous years, need to be registered through the online system.  Go to the APS Volunteer Application Process page and fill out the online volunteer application.  After you apply, there’s a short training to complete, and then your application will be approved. If you have questions about this process, please talk to Ms. Griffin in the office at 703-228-7670.

Not in the ASFS PTA Directory? Opt in through ParentVUE!

ASFS Room Parents are creating classroom email lists for 2019-20... if you'd like to be included, make sure you have opted into the ASFS PTA Directory!

When you complete the new APS Annual Online Verification Process through APS ParentVUEselect ‘Yes, Please provide my student/family information’ under PTA Directory Information for each of your APS students to be included in the ASFS PTA Directory (see below):

The ASFS PTA Directory is the primary way parents may communicate with each other, including classroom email lists. We encourage all parents to opt-in in order to connect with fellow ASFS families.

If you need to activate your ParentVUE account, follow the Instructions for Activating Your ParentVUE Account. (If you need your individual activation code, please contact Loren Fuentes in the ASFS Front Office at 703.228.7670.)

Contact ASFS PTA Directory Lead Patricia Wilson with any questions.
