PTA Updates: News from the ASFS PTA

We are fortunate to welcome special guest speaker, Monique O'Grady, our ASFS liaison to the Arlington School Board. Please submit any questions for Monique by Sunday, 9/29: October PTA Meeting Questions for Monique O'Grady

Thanks to everyone who submitted input on our ASFS PTA meetings and how to make them the most useful and easiest to attend. Based on feedback, we'll keep the meeting start times at 7:00pm with the goal to make them as informative and efficient as possible. We always welcome thoughts and ideas, so please reach out anytime & we'll continue to work on ways to keep everyone engaged and informed.

Thanks for a great turnout at the Kindergarten Fall Picnic and Parent Coffee, and look forward to the next events for the 1st through 5th grades coming up over the coming weeks!  --Dena Porter, ASFS PTA President

ASFS Principal News: Notes from Ms. Begley

Can Your Child Independently Tie His/Her Shoes?

We have many of our students wearing tie shoes.  If they cannot tie them independently, many times they fall and get injured.  Please work with your child at home to make sure they know how to tie shoes.  Thank you.

Every Student Has an Identification/Student Number

All APS students have an identification or student number.  Please work with your child so that he/she is able to punch this number into the keypad for lunch.  We have been using cards for our kindergarten students, but need to transition to the keypad in October.  It is very easy to weave this into your day by asking the child to tell you their number once they have learned it.  Kindergarten and first grade parents received a cardboard keypad to practice on.  This will be their ID number through 12th grade, so it is very important for each child to be proficient with their identification/student ID.  Thank you for your help.

PTA Participation Update - Thank You, ASFS Families!

Thank you to all who have joined the ASFS PTA (over 31% of families!), submitted their PTA Volunteer Form (15% of families), and already donated to the No-Frills fundraiser (5%)! We appreciate your support for our school!

We are very grateful for our ASFS community - click below to show your support:

Parents/Guardians: Are You Fully Registered?

It's as easy as 1-2-3! See the ASFS Parent Registration Information Flyer for details:

  1. Have you completed the new Annual Online Verification Process? This new system replaces the First Day Packet students previously received on the first day of school.  Your completion of the AOVP is vital for updating and maintaining accurate student information for our students. This new process utilizes ParentVUE, the online tool that families can use to track the latest information regarding their students. With online verification, families will now be able to update information for each of their students through their ParentVUE account at the start of school.  If you haven’t done it yet, please do so by October 31.  And if you need help, just call the ASFS office at 703-228-7670 - we’re always here to help.
  2. Have you been registered for the ASFS building? This is another new system this year.  All parents and guardians must be registered at the main office with their official ID—a driver’s license or other governmental ID is the most common.  Come into the main office and Ms. Fuentes will register you with your ID.  Once you are registered, when you come to school you can sign in with your ID at the kiosk in the front office and get a personalized nametag.  Anyone coming into the school must stop and get a nametag.  Just remember your ID every time you come in, and you’ll be all set!
  3. Have you signed up online to volunteer/chaperone this year? Finally, there is a new process for signing up to volunteer or chaperone.  All volunteers, even if they filled out paperwork in previous years, need to be registered through the online system.  Go to the APS Volunteer Application Process page and fill out the online volunteer application.  After you apply, there’s a short training to complete, and then your application will be approved. If you have questions about this process, please talk to Ms. Griffin in the office at 703-228-7670.
