PTA Updates: News from the ASFS PTA

What a great first week of school! Thank you to all parents, teachers, and staff who joined us at the September PTA meeting on Tuesday night - such a good turnout and a great way to get started as ONE T.E.A.M. this year. As Ms. Begley shared with the photo below, we "aim high" at ASFS!

We'd love everyone in our community to attend PTA meetings, as well as all of our school programs & events. As we brainstorm for the year ahead, take a minute to share your thoughts in this brief survey: 1) do you have a preference for PTA meeting start times? and 2) the PTA would love your feedback and ideas for this year.

We hope you will get involved in the areas that interest you. Remember to submit your ASFS PTA Volunteer Form, and you'll learn about more ways to provide help in your child's classroom at Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 11th from 7:00-8:30pm. Make sure to line up child care so you can attend this important adults-only evening!

Hope to see you this Sunday, September 8th at the Back to School Picnic! --Dena Porter, ASFS PTA President

ASFS Food Bus Program & Volunteer Sign-up

ASFS and Food Bus – PLEASE JOIN US! ASFS and Food Bus are again partnering to reduce food waste and feed the hungry in our community!

Did you know that the United States throws out enough food to fill the Rose Bowl… every single day? At the same time, 1 in 6 U.S. families with children live in a household in which their access to adequate food is limited by insufficient money or other resources.

To reduce the amount of waste added to our landfills, and also assist in feeding the many hungry children and families in Arlington served by AFAC (Arlington Food Assistance Center), each school day we ask the students to collect unopened/unused food that they would otherwise throw in the trash after lunch.  ASFS then donates this food to AFAC to feed those in need. Last year, our students saved 680 pounds of food from the lunchroom garbage and donated it to AFAC!

How It Works At the end of lunch, students leave their unopened, whole foods served by the cafeteria (milk, fruit, bagged carrots, yogurts, etc.) on the Food Bus table.  At the end of lunch, the food is stored in the Food Bus refrigerator.

How You Can Help At the end of each school week, a parent volunteer will collect the food from the Food Bus refrigerator, sort it into bins and deliver the food to AFAC. An AFAC volunteer will weigh the food for us, and we record the number of pounds on our Food Bus chart. The students can track how much food our school donates over the course of the year!

The pick up and drop off process typically takes less than an hour in total, and we could really use your help! If you can help, please sign up using this link: ASFS Food Bus Program Volunteer Sign-up

For more information, please email Jackie JavaThank you in advance for your support!

ASFS Box Tops for Education 2019-20

Box Tops Is Going Digital!
Have you downloaded the Box Tops for Education app yet?  I'll be at the ASFS Picnic this Sunday and Back to School Night if you have questions.
Remember, Box Tops is a program that helps you earn money for our school.  When you buy participating products (like Cheerios, Cascadian Farms, and Ziploc bags) at the grocery store, your purchase can help our school.
Each time you shop and buy products with the Box Tops symbol on them, use the app to scan your grocery store receipt.  That's all you have to do (the app will count the Box Tops for you).  You have to do that within 14 days of your purchase.
So no more clipping is required!  Of course, if you do still have the old fashioned little pink Box Tops certificates, you should send them in to school when school starts.  There's going to be some overlap between the new digital option and the old cut-out option.
Hint:  if you buy a product that still has a pink certificate on it, you can earn twice!  Scan your receipt with the app AND cut out the certificate and send it in to school.
New for ASFS this year:  instead of a class contest we're going to have a school challenge!  If we as a school earn enough, we'll use the money to buy something special all the kids can enjoy.  Stay tuned for more information.
Please send me any questions. Amy Hodges, Box Tops Chair

ASFS New Family Buddy Program

This fantastic program allows our new families to connect with existing ASFS families to help them acclimate to the school, have a resource for questions and meet new people. The ASFS Buddy Program is a fun way to get involved with the school.

We are looking for returning ASFS families to volunteer as "buddies." Being an ASFS Buddy is easy and does not require a lot of time. I ask that you do at least one gathering with your new family, and be a resource to help answer their questions. You can setup a playdate, coffee, glass of wine or meet at an ASFS event. This is a wonderful and very rewarding experience. We need families to make this a success. If interested, please email Jennifer Bethel. Thank you!

Are you new to ASFS? Join our Buddy Program! If you are new to ASFS, please join our buddy program to meet new families and have a resource to help you acclimate to school. Once your child(ren) has a teacher assignment, fill out the form and we will match you with a buddy. It is easy and fun! Email Jennifer Bethel with any questions.
