PTA Updates: News from the ASFS PTA

Welcome to the first issue of the weekly ASFS PTA Electronic Friday Folder for the 2019-20 school year! You will recieve the ASFS eFF via email every Friday during the school year. Take a few minutes to read through each week to stay up to date with all of the latest PTA happenings.

As you can see below, we owe a huge thank you to our many PTA leads and committee chairs for all of their efforts to kick off our events and initiatives coming up this fall. And we also welcome all ASFS teachers and staff who are working hard to plan for the start of the school year!

Next week is the ASFS Open House on Thursday, August 29th from 3:00-4:00pm. Hope you and your ASFS child(ren) can come to visit your classroom(s) and meet your teacher(s). It's a great way to start the year, and help with the first day of school. You are welcome to drop off school supplies as well, and stop by the PTA table in the lobby to join the PTA, get ParentVUE/APS online verification process/PTA directory opt-in support, and get your back to school questions answered.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions, and hope to see you at the Open House if not before! --Dena Porter, ASFS PTA President

Welcome, ASFS Families - Notes from Principal, Ms. Begley

Welcome to all of our ASFS Families  We have been working very the past weeks to prepare our building after the Parks and Recs programs finished on August 16th.  We are fully staffed and preparing to receive your children at Open House on Thursday, August 29th from 3:00-4:00pm.  Please bring your school supplies on that day so that your child(ren) will have them at their seat for the first day of school.

ParentVUE – If you have not signed up for ParentVUE, please sign up ASAP.  The movement for APS is to have all communication including forms from the first day packet on Parent Vue.  At Open House on Thursday, August 29th, we will have the computer lab set up to help you register.

Visitor Registration System – This year APS has installed the VMS sign in process in all schools.  As you enter ASFS, you will go to the office and register in this system.  The initial sign in takes approximately 5-10 minutes and after that you will be able to scan your ID, a label will be printed out, and then will be able to go to your child’s classroom or the place you are volunteering.  To register, you need a driver’s license or (any) government ID.  You will need to use the same ID every time you check in. The information is only your name on the label printed.  This visitor registration is to ensure we have no registered sex offenders in our building, but any information about documentation.  We want every parent who plans to visit or volunteer to be registered by October 15, 2019.  This is a process and we know there will be some glitches and we need to work together.  Every chaperone for any field trip or volunteer must be registered in the ARS.  We are here to help you and we are registering each new family as we register them.  Thank you for your patience in this process.

Welcome to Ms. Griffin & Ms. Torres – We want to welcome Stacia Griffin and Jackie Torres to our office staff.  We are excited for the new opportunities Ms.  Vogel and Ms. Prenger have moved on to and welcome our new staff.  Please stop by to welcome them.

ASFS Food Bus Program & Volunteer Sign-up

ASFS and Food Bus – PLEASE JOIN US! ASFS and Food Bus are again partnering to reduce food waste and feed the hungry in our community!

Did you know that the United States throws out enough food to fill the Rose Bowl… every single day? At the same time, 1 in 6 U.S. families with children live in a household in which their access to adequate food is limited by insufficient money or other resources.

To reduce the amount of waste added to our landfills, and also assist in feeding the many hungry children and families in Arlington served by AFAC (Arlington Food Assistance Center), each school day we ask the students to collect unopened/unused food that they would otherwise throw in the trash after lunch.  ASFS then donates this food to AFAC to feed those in need. Last year, our students saved 680 pounds of food from the lunchroom garbage and donated it to AFAC!

How It Works At the end of lunch, students leave their unopened, whole foods served by the cafeteria (milk, fruit, bagged carrots, yogurts, etc.) on the Food Bus table.  At the end of lunch, the food is stored in the Food Bus refrigerator.

How You Can Help At the end of each school week, a parent volunteer will collect the food from the Food Bus refrigerator, sort it into bins and deliver the food to AFAC. An AFAC volunteer will weigh the food for us, and we record the number of pounds on our Food Bus chart. The students can track how much food our school donates over the course of the year!

The pick up and drop off process typically takes less than an hour in total, and we could really use your help! If you can help, please sign up using this link: ASFS Food Bus Program Volunteer Sign-up

For more information, please email Jackie JavaThank you in advance for your support!

ASFS Box Tops for Education 2019-20

Box Tops Is Going Digital!  WHAT?

First of all, do you know what Box Tops for Education is?  It's a program that helps you earn money for our school.  When you buy participating products (like Cheerios, Cascadian Farms, and Ziploc bags) at the grocery store, your purchase can help our school if you follow these simple steps:

1. Please download the Box Tops app, and select Arlington Science Focus as your school.  You only have to do that part one time.  Do it now!

2.  Each time you shop and buy products with the Box Tops symbol on them, you can use the app to scan your grocery store receipt.  That's all you have to do (the app will count the Box Tops for you).  You have to do that within 14 days of your purchase.

So no more clipping is required!  Of course, if you do still have the old fashioned little pink Box Tops certificates, you should send them in to school when school starts.  There's going to be some overlap between the new digital option and the old cut-out option.

Hint: If you buy a product that still has a pink certificate on it, you can earn twice!  Scan your receipt with the app AND cut out the certificate and send it in to school.

New for ASFS this year: Instead of a class contest, we're going to have a school challenge!  If we as a school earn enough, we'll use the money to buy something special all the kids can enjoy.  Stay tuned for more information.

Please send any questions to Amy Hodges, Box Tops Chair

ASFS New Family Buddy Program

This fantastic program allows our new families to connect with existing ASFS families to help them acclimate to the school, have a resource for questions and meet new people. The ASFS Buddy Program is a fun way to get involved with the school.

We are looking for returning ASFS families to volunteer as "buddies." Being an ASFS Buddy is easy and does not require a lot of time. I ask that you do at least one gathering with your new family, and be a resource to help answer their questions. You can setup a playdate, coffee, glass of wine or meet at an ASFS event. This is a wonderful and very rewarding experience. We need families to make this a success. If interested, please email Jennifer Bethel. Thank you!

Are you new to ASFS? Join our Buddy Program! If you are new to ASFS, please join our buddy program to meet new families and have a resource to help you acclimate to school. Once your child(ren) has a teacher assignment, fill out the form and we will match you with a buddy. It is easy and fun! Email Jennifer Bethel with any questions.
