Summer Greetings from the ASFS PTA

Welcome to the summer issue of the ASFS PTA Electronic Friday Folder! With just over a month until the start of the school year, there is a lot to look forward to:

  1. Mark your calendar for our August ASFS PTA Meeting - Tuesday, August 6th at 7:00pm in the ASFS Library. A great way to learn more about the upcoming year and get your questions answered. Look for details in the ASFS PTA Meeting Reminder. Hope to see you there!
  2. Join the ASFS PTA for 2019-20 for $10 per individual member or $20 per family. You can join online, or pick up a PTA membership envelope in the front office to pay by cash/check (payable to the ASFS PTA). Thanks for showing your support for our school community!
  3. Submit your 2019-20 ASFS PTA Volunteer Form to sign up to help out with events and committees throughout the school year. There are many ways to get involved, whether during the day or outside of school hours.

Note: The weekly ASFS Electronic Friday Folder will return on Friday, August 23rd. In the meantime, remember to follow ASFS PTA on Facebook and ASFS PTA on Twitter to keep up with the latest PTA news. You can also visit the ASFS PTA Website for key information.

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and look forward to seeing you soon!  --Dena Porter, ASFS PTA President

Login to APS ParentVUE & Opt-in to the ASFS PTA Directory

The PTA Directory is the primary way parents may communicate with each other, including classroom email lists. We encourage all parents to opt-in to be included in the 2019-20 ASFS PTA Directory to connect with fellow ASFS families. To opt-in, follow these steps:

If you have an existing ParentVUE account, you will need to go through the NEW APS Annual Online Verification Process steps and opt-in to be included in the directory, under PTA Directory Information (see below):

If you need to activate your ParentVUE account, follow the Instructions for Activating Your ParentVUE Account. (If you need your individual activation code, please contact Loren Fuentes in the ASFS Front Office at 703.228.7670.)

  • You must opt in for each student, so even if you are are a returning family, make sure you opt in for your new Kindergarten students as well.
  • From APS: Students enrolled for the 19-20 School Year that were not enrolled in APS previously WILL NOT be visible in ParentVUE until the first day of school. However, you will see your returning students.

Contact ASFS PTA Directory Lead Patricia Wilson with any questions.

Box Tops for Education 2019-20

Box Tops Is Going Digital!  WHAT?

First of all, do you know what Box Tops for Education is?  It's a program that helps you earn money for our school.  When you buy participating products (like Cheerios, Cascadian Farms, and Ziploc bags) at the grocery store, your purchase can help our school if you follow these simple steps:

1. Please download the Box Tops app, and select Arlington Science Focus as your school.  You only have to do that part one time.  Do it now!

2.  Each time you shop and buy products with the Box Tops symbol on them, you can use the app to scan your grocery store receipt.  That's all you have to do (the app will count the Box Tops for you).  You have to do that within 14 days of your purchase.

So no more clipping is required!  Of course, if you do still have the old fashioned little pink Box Tops certificates, you should send them in to school when school starts.  There's going to be some overlap between the new digital option and the old cut-out option.

Hint:  if you buy a product that still has a pink certificate on it, you can earn twice!  Scan your receipt with the app AND cut out the certificate and send it in to school.

New for ASFS this year: Instead of a class contest, we're going to have a school challenge!  If we as a school earn enough, we'll use the money to buy something special all the kids can enjoy.  Stay tuned for more information.

Please send any questions to Amy Hodges, Box Tops Chair

Open PTA Roles for Next Year

Looking for ways to help out for the 2019-20 school year? The ASFS PTA has a number of roles we are looking to fill:

  • 5th Grade Cherrydale Rehab Field Trip Coordinator - Support optional after-school outings with small groups of ASFS 5th graders to the nearby Cherrydale Rehabilitation Center to visit with residents on a periodic basis
  • ASFS "Dine Out" Event Coordinator - Set up and coordinate family dining nights (like Silver Diner and The Simple Greek) and manage local restaurant opportunities to support ASFS
  • ASFS Theater Production Lead - Serve as the lead to work with Baroody Camps to coordinate an after-school theater program and end of year production

Please email Dena Porter if you might be interested in or have any questions about any of these roles. Thank you!

ASFS New Family Buddy Program

This fantastic program allows our new families to connect with existing ASFS families to help them acclimate to the school, have a resource for questions and meet new people. The ASFS Buddy Program is a fun way to get involved with the school.

We are looking for returning ASFS families to volunteer as "buddies."

Being an ASFS Buddy is easy and does not require a lot of time. I ask that you do at least one gathering with your new family, and be a resource to help answer their questions. You can setup a playdate, coffee, glass of wine or meet at an ASFS event. This is a wonderful and very rewarding experience. We need families to make this a success. If interested, please email Jennifer Bethel. Thank you!

Are you new to ASFS? Join our Buddy Program!

If you are new to ASFS, please join our buddy program to meet new families and have a resource to help you acclimate to school. Once your child(ren) has a teacher assignment, fill out the form and we will match you with a buddy. It is easy and fun!

For more details and to sign up, visit the ASFS Buddy Program page. Email Jennifer Bethel with any questions.

APAH Backpack Drive Update

Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing (APAH) would like to thank the generous parents, friends, and neighbors of ASFS and the ASFS PTA who donated beautiful new backpacks and supplies to our 2019 backpack drive. Your support is helping us ensure that every child who needs these items to start the school year has them in hand. THANK YOU!

National PTA Reflections Contest 2019

The theme of this year's National PTA Reflections Contest is Look Within, and we encourage all student artists to enjoy creating art as part of this annual contest through the National PTA. Click for more information on the National PTA Reflections Contest, and look for details this fall about submitting your child's creations at ASFS as part of our school's participation in this annual contest.
