ASFS Teacher/Support Staff of the Year Recommendations

Share our joy in congratulating Ms. Katie Pickett, our ASFS Teacher of the Year, and Mr. Jarvin Winger, our Support Staff of the Year! There will be an APS ceremony later this school year, but we need your help. As part of the process, ASFS sends their name forward and they are currently seeking letters of support. We are asking our ASFS community that includes current and former teachers, parents, and students to write a letter for one or both of these nominees. The letters are due by December 20th and can be addressed- To Whom It May Concern:

Upon completion of the letter it can be returned to either Ms. Hall, or the two nominees themselves. Thank you for your help in supporting both of these staff members!

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Jenn Hall - thank you!

ASFS Teacher & Staff Wish List

Thinking about what to get for your hardworking teacher and ASFS staff this holiday, take a look at what is on their WISH LIST! Keep in mind the APS gift guidelines.

If you do not see your teacher on the list, Amazon, Target, and Starbucks are always good gift card ideas! Please keep in mind our Principal, VP, office staff (4), extended day staff, custodians (4), cafeteria staff (4), and nurses (2).

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Rabia Oubenadi. Happy Holidays!

Can you imagine keeping track of 140 energetic kids? What about keeping them safe, happy and engaged? This is what our talented team of ASFS Extended Day staff does every day with grace and compassion. Now is the time for us to let them know just how much we appreciate all that they do!

I am organizing a holiday collection for Sabrina and her team, and we need your help. This is a great way to pool our resources together and thank each and every one of our Extended Day staff members. See flyers at extended day. All contributions are welcome. If you have any questions, please email Ilse Bercik.

Thank You for Supporting the ASFS Book Fair

Thanks to to our generous community, the annual ASFS Book Fair was a tremendous success last week. We raised over $15,000 in book sales plus an additional $750 in donations.  With our proceeds, 48 ASFS teachers were able to purchase $100 in books for each of their classrooms, we provided Ms. A'Hearn with funding for additional books for the library, and we contributed over $2,000 to the ASFS PTA to support future school programs and events.

A huge thank you to Michelle Brydges and the team of volunteers who made the Book Fair possible. A special thank you to Ms. A'Hearn and Mr. McGuire for all of their support and help during the week.  And we want to individually thank all of the helpers who contributed, whether setting up or running a shift at the checkout table, we can't hold such great events at ASFS without all of you.

Here are the current standings as of mid-December:

First place, again: Caven (5th)
Second place, moving up: Pitsakis (4th)
Third place: Kirschenmann (4th)
Fourth place: Gallagher (5th)

Keep your class in the race!  Don’t give up, there are other classes close behind the leaders. Winter Break is a great time to look around your home (and wherever travels take you) for Box Tops for Education. Box Tops are on everyday products like Ziploc, Cheerios, Larabars, Nature Valley, and Cascadian Farm. Cut out the little pink certificates, and collect them in a zip top baggie or envelope, or glue or tape them to a submission sheet. Submission sheets are available by the white plastic drop-off bin by the multi-purpose room. Make sure to include your teacher’s name before dropping them in the white bin. Help raise money for our school at no extra cost to you!

Thank you, Amy Hodges

'Tis the Season of Giving from your heart (and your closet!)
During the season of giving it's refreshing to give to others from your heart without spending money. How easy was it to clean out your closets AND help your neighbor kids in Arlington?!
ASFS, your donation of OVER 400 pieces of clothing was monumental to The Clothesline. Your donation helps support a welcoming place where low-income families in our community can get children’s clothes free of charge. The Clotheslines opened at the end of the summer and already have served over 300 kids. Ellen Moy, the founder, greatly appreciates your clothing donations and personally will see the smiles of happiness and gratitude from the kids who benefit from your kindness!
Should you wish for a donation receipt please contact Karrie Beaudry.

Thank You for Your Holiday Helpers Donations

Thank you to all the families who contributed to the Holiday Helpers program this year! Through your generous support, we will be able to provide gifts to ASFS children in need for a great holiday season. Happy Holidays!

Thank You From Gifts That Give Hope
Thanks to the ASFS community for an educational and philanthropic morning this past Saturday at Gifts That Give Hope. There were several teacher appearances, ASFS students performed in Bollywood & Hawaiian dances, and ran the kids check-out. Thank you to all the ASFS shoppers who helped contribute to the more than 800 donations made to local nonprofits! You can still “shop” online through December 20th.

2019 ASFS Auction

Save the date for:

2019 ASFS Auction
In Roaring 20s Style

Saturday, February 23, 2019
7-11 pm
Clarendon Ballroom

The ASFS PTA invites staff, families, and friends for a fun night out to support our school. The auction is an adult-only event and our school’s primary fundraiser of the year. Tickets for the auction are purchased in advance. We will have food, drinks, casino games, and more! The event is a great opportunity for you to socialize with other parents and staff while also helping raise money to benefit our students’ education.

There are many ways for each of our ASFS families to ensure the success of the event this year:

Volunteer — We need help planning this fun night. Please contact Kristi Tsiopanas if you are interested in joining our team. There are many ways to help, big and small. Some key open roles are:
> Donations Team
> Auction Website Team

Host a Parent Party — Let the party continue! Some of the most fun auction items are the Parent Parties, parties hosted by groups of ASFS families. Find a few friends and co-host a dance party, a movie night, private chef, poker night, wine tasting, or really anything! Many memories have been built from the Parent Parties!

Get the Goods — We are looking for desirable, unique and high-quality donations of all sizes and are asking EVERYONE to think through their entire network of family, friends and colleagues – anyone you know that might have access to popular and/or creative auction items. Do you know someone with a vacation home who is willing to donate a week or weekend? Sports tickets? Unique experiences like a behind-the-scenes tour? Don’t be afraid to solicit beyond local businesses! If you want to be part of the donations team or have a business in mind, email us so we can make sure there are no redundancies, and so we can support you with a procurement package.

Look for more details after the break! Don't hesitate to contact Kristi Tsiopanas if you have any questions/comments/ideas!
