Principal Notes: Updates from Ms. Begley
Turf for the Field

Well there has been another delay and this one is quite pricey.  With the new requirements by the County of Arlington to dig further into the depth of the soil than in the original proposal, the price of installation has more than tripled. The cost of installation has risen to $530,000.00.  This significant increase requires the School Board to allocate approximately $400,000.00 in addition to the original proposal. With the increase in price, the School Board will receive this information at the meeting on 11/29 and vote on it on 12/6. I have requested that the installation begin as soon after that as possible and that the 2 week winter break would be a terrific time for this to happen as no children will be at school.

Please Help Our Traffic

During the first 10 weeks of school, we have had many “close calls” in regards to private cars bringing and picking up children at ASFS. There is an excellent solution – PLEASE have your child take the bus. We have the capability to get our buses in and out much more quickly when there are not so many private cars. The buses are new and are heated and air conditioned. Using the bus is such a privilege and we encourage ALL of our students to take the bus.

On Monday morning when we had the rain, cars were lined up in the bus loop and the buses could not get in to drop off students. People were doing U turns un the street and running in front of other vehicles. People are illegally parking in the lot across the street in front of the gate and in handicap parking spots. This is very dangerous! We are so fortunate in Arlington County to have such a wonderful FREE public school bus system. Please use the bus.

Arrival Time for Students

Please do not bring your child to school prior to 8:30 am. We do not have staff to supervise.

Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self-Control. These are the pillars of positive character development that we work on at ASFS each and every day with our students. Please reinforce these pillars at home and talk with your child about ways we all can incorporate them into everything we do. Thank you for your support.

Do You Want to Receive Messages By Text?

Would you like to receive important messages from us as a text message in addition to email? If so, there’s an easy fix. As long as your cell number is already in the school's database/Synergy, just text the word YES to 67587. This will verify that you can receive text messages to that phone. (If you think the school does not have your cell number, please call the school to verify).

Announcing the ASFS PTA Directory... Now Live!

The ASFS PTA Directory is officially live now! You may view and search the ASFS PTA Directory for all ASFS families who have chosen to opt-in. Some important notes:

  • All ASFS family data is safe and secure. You must login to view the ASFS PTA Directory. You can register on the ASFS PTA website if you haven't already.
  • You can adjust what contact information is viewable to others on the ASFS PTA Directory Dashboard.
  • If you have any questions or find any issues on the ASFS PTA Directory, please contact Anna Whitehead and Amanda Agetstein, ASFS PTA Directory leads. Thank you for your flexibility as we work through a brand-new system, knowing there may be updates required.

We currently have about 85% of families who have chosen to be included in the ASFS PTA Directory. If you would still like to opt in, you may login to ParentVUE or complete a paper Release of Student Information Form (available in the ASFS Front Office).

New Middle School Naming Options

The new middle school Naming Committee met for the second time on October 12th. It was a lively and productive meeting with approximately 30 participants including parents, students, and interested community members. Each representative arrived with suggestions for the name from their community/school. Led by Principal Ellen Smith, the group was able to winnow down the many suggestions to three finalists. This was an impressive feat given the broad range of options we started from. The task was made easier, however, by the clear and early consensus that the word “Stratford” should remain in the name in some capacity; the vast majority of submissions preferred that the school be called Stratford MS or include the name Stratford.

The finalists, in no particular order, are as follows:
  1. Stratford Middle School
  2. Legacy Middle School at the Historic Stratford Building
  3. Dorothy Hamm Middle School at the Historic Stratford Building

The final assessment of these options - at the Committee’s next meeting at the end of November - will be further informed by the committee members’ respective constituents. Please share your own view by completing this short survey prior to November 23rd.

The final step of this process will be a presentation to the School Board where the finalist and alternate name will be presented. The renaming consideration process is part of the new School Board policy for naming any new school. The School Board will have the final decision, likely at their December meeting.

More information on the Stratford Building's historic designation can be found here.

More information on Dorothy Hamm can be found here.

Please feel free to contact Toni Wexler or Kris Humphrey with any questions.

Upcoming Community Service

Giving back to our friends/family, school, community or charity of choice is so important. Teaching our children about Giving Back instills Empathy, Responsibility, Leadership and Innovative Thinking. February 4-8, 2019 we will hold the first ASFS Community Service Week building upon the great work we have done for A-SPAN, AFAC and other organizations in need. Each grade level will be assigned a charity and will work on a project to fill a specific need. Multiple charity organizations will be represented. We may be in need of one more organization; suggestions welcome at karrie@onyxav.com. Currently we have A-SPAN, Lost Dog, Operation Turbo and Cherrydale Health and Rehab.

What can you do in the meantime?

  • put aside towels and blankets for future collection at ASFS
  • collect travel toiletries for future collection at ASFS
  • donate mens or women's winter clothes to A-SPAN
  • sign up to serve food at A-SPAN dining room
  • designate Lost Dog or Lost Cat as the Birthday Charity for your kiddos

Save the Date: Outside the Box Day – November 28th, 9-11am

Please join us for Outside the Box Day on Wednesday, November 28th from 9:00-11:00am! We hope you will enjoy watching the students engage in one of the many children's engineering projects that will be taking place at ASFS. The students will be presented with a challenge, the criteria they will need to meet, and the materials they’ll get to work with. Then they’ll brainstorm possible solutions, choose the best one, and execute it. Be especially on the lookout for the children’s incredible problem-solving skills when they run into a problem, and encourage them to find solutions to their obstacles by thinking outside the box! You will be amazed by the children’s creativity!

Parents, please meet in the library at 9:00am. before being dismissed to the classrooms. At this event, we ask that you not bring siblings as we want you to be able to fully participate with your child and his/her classmates in the classroom. Thank you!

Recyclables Needed for Outside the Box Day – Please Start Saving!

In order for the children to complete their engineering projects on Outside the Box Day, each grade level will need specific recyclables. Please check the attached document to see what your child’s grade level needs, and if you can save other materials on the list for other grade levels, we would greatly appreciate that as well! Please send the recyclables in to your child’s classroom or Investigation Station as soon as you can. It is important for us to know how much we have/how much we still need early on. Thank you for helping to contribute to the success of Outside the Box Day!

We also need help from parent volunteers to sort these recyclables before and after the event is over. If you are able to spare some time to help us out, please SIGN UP.
