PTA News: This Week at ASFS

Thank you, ASFS Teachers, for hosting parent/teacher conferences this week! And thanks to all parents for contributing to dinner and breakfast for the teachers to say thank you for all they do for our students.

Coming up this week... the annual ASFS Halloween Parade is Wednesday, 10/31 at 2:00pm! Hope you can join us to watch the kids show off their costumes and celebrate afterwards with classroom parties (siblings are welcome for the parade, but not classroom parties).

Looking for ways to get involved? We always need help - lots of fun ways to support the school and connect with fellow ASFS families! See below for details:

  • Fall Clean-up Day: Sunday, 10/28 (12-2pm) - Beautify our school grounds and support ASFS Investigation Station lead, Ms. Lin
  • Yearbook Photographers: Help ASFS Yearbook lead, Ms. Caven, with taking photos for the yearbook
  • Annual auction, fundraising, community service, school grounds... you name it, whatever your interests (and even if you only can spare an hour or two here and there), email Dena Porter, ASFS PTA President, if you'd like to get involved, or submit your ASFS Volunteer Form.

And there are other ways to give too: Read below for information about the collection drive for Hurricane Michael Relief (thanks to ASFS Girl Scouts) and Halloween Candy Collection for Ronald McDonald House.

ASFS Yearbook: Need 4th Grade Parent Volunteer

Do you like taking photos? Want to help out with this year's ASFS Yearbook? We are looking for a volunteer for each grade to serve as the ASFS Yearbook representative. We still need a 4th Grade Parent Volunteer if you can help out! Other interested volunteers are more than welcome as well.

No need to be an expert photographer or have a fancy camera (phone-quality pictures are great!) If you take pictures at school events, and would be willing to collect photos from other parents, we would love your help! Please email Dena Porter if you are interested in being a grade-level yearbook representative. Krysten Caven (5th Grade Teacher and Yearbook Lead) will be in touch with details and next steps once we have the yearbook team in place.

Your time on last Friday was very much appreciated. Whether picking up a class, assisting students with grooming or directing the students, you were a huge part of the Picture Day success!

Costumes & Coats

THANK YOU to all that made the 2018 costume swap a success! We had more donations than ever this year, and many students were able to go home with a new costume, whether it be for Halloween or dress-up/pretend play. We also appreciated gathering with old & new friends alike to celebrate fall and have some fun! Leftover costumes have been donated. Thanks for helping to keep us green.

UP NEXT: Start putting your kids' outgrown coats, jackets & winter weather attire aside for the coat swap in the 3rd week of November. More details to come. Questions or comments? Please email ASFS Green Committee.

Going Green, One Month at a Time!

October tips to help our community:

How to Green your Halloween? Slime is fun, but we also have other ideas! Our science focused school helps teach the importance of protecting our planet for this generation and the next. Let's practice what we teach starting with our school halloween party. Here are some tips on what that might look like. Pick a few from the list to incorporate or challenge your team & see how many you can follow. This list is a supportive guide and by no means is exhaustive. Please share if you have any other great ideas!

Reduce or eliminate waste (empty calories/full trash cans) by avoiding:

  • artificial colors
  • sugar (you'll be grateful at bedtime)
  • plastics (especially water bottles & balloons)
  • utensils (finger foods are great)
  • purchasing new or excessive decorations

  • Save decorations for future parties (keep in mind, they can be passed on to other room parents). Use items in nature; explore your creativity!
  • Have kids use their water bottles from lunch for a drink
  • If some kids do not have reusable cups &/or you want back up, consider bringing in a large jug and, ideally, reusable or recyclable cups
  • Use reusable or recyclable plates, serving items & table covers
  • Be mindful of using things that are individually wrapped which will create more waste
  • Use fruits and vegetables to your advantage & be creative! A tray of sugar snap peas & black olives makes a neat Frankenstein head.
  • Have one of your party stations be a food craft they will appreciate even more upon eating!

The possibilities abound - enjoy & pass on your good efforts. We'd love to hear about it!

Happy Halloween, The Green Committee

All eFF submissions must be received by Eveline Broderick by noon on Wednesday. All content will be subject to approval by ASFS administration and the PTA.
