PTA News: This Week at ASFS

Thank you ASFS parents for your support! Great to see so many of you at our parent coffees over the recent weeks, and helping out with the grade-level social events and other school programs. If you are looking for ways to volunteer your time, we need ASFS Yearbook photographers, support for our fall school grounds clean-up, and help with teacher meals during conferences - see below for details. Free Flu Shots for Your Children at ASFS

This year, Arlington Public Schools is partnering with Healthy Schools, the nation’s largest school vaccine provider, to offer flu shots to all APS students during the school day. Our goal is to keep all students healthy and to help fight the flu this season by ensuring that flu shots are available to 100% of APS students.

The flu shot clinic will be at ASFS on Wednesday, November 28th from 9:00-11:30am.

The copay is $0, so there is no cost. 

All students were given forms and flyers to take home today. If you would like your child to receive this service, please complete the consent form for EACH child and return the form(s) to your child(ren)’s classroom teacher BEFORE Tuesday, October 30th. 

Last year’s flu season was among the worst in more than a decade, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends a flu shot as everyone’s #1 defense against the flu. We encourage all families to help fight the flu this season – get a flu shot for your student, either through this in-school program or with your physician.

The Healthy Schools flu shot clinics will be staffed by qualified nurses who have been trained to care for kids. The nurses are often local to our community and may even be an APS parent! The clinic nurse can also help address any questions you may have or click here for more information.

Health Instruction

A new law (HB1532) that took effect on July 1, 2018 requires school divisions to provide age appropriate health instruction for each elementary and secondary school on the safe use of and risks of abuse of prescription drugs. Arlington elementary physical education teachers will be delivering lessons on this content in grades K-five which will also include instruction on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. In August, all elementary physical education teachers received professional development to deliver this instruction.These lessons will be taught once per week during physical education class either in the gym, classroom or a combination of both. There are approximately 3 lessons per grade level that align with the Virginia health standards of learning. Schools will begin this instruction in late October following Red Ribbon Week (approximately Nov. 1). For more details: HB1532 Health Education Program

Third Grade Potluck - Sunday, October 21st 4-6pm

Your family is invited... Join us for the THIRD GRADE POTLUCK at Hayes Park (across from ASFS) this Sunday, October 21st from 4:00-6:00pm! Please join fellow ASFS 3rd grade families to celebrate the start of a new school year. It’s a potluck! Please bring enough to share with others:

ASFS Yearbook Photographers Needed

Do you like taking photos? Want to help out with this year's ASFS Yearbook? We are looking for a volunteer for each grade to serve as the ASFS Yearbook representative. No need to be an expert photographer or have a fancy camera (phone-quality pictures are great!) If you take pictures at school events, and would be willing to collect photos from other parents, we would love your help! Please email Dena Porter by Friday, October 26th if you are interested in being a grade-level yearbook representative. Krysten Caven (5th Grade Teacher and Yearbook Lead) will be in touch with details and next steps once we have the yearbook team in place. Sign Up! Parent-Teacher Conference Meals

The PTA will be hosting dinner and light breakfast, for the hard working teachers during parent teacher conferences on October 25th & October 26th! 

It will be a long day for our teachers, so we need to provide them with some much needed nourishment. We need your help to provide this much appreciated treat! If you are able to contribute, please sign up.

All contributions need to be dropped in the Staff Lounge by 3pm on Thursday and 7am on Friday please. Non perishables may be dropped the day before. Pershables should be left in the refrigerator. Volunteers Needed: ASFS Grounds Fall Clean-up

Mark your calendars! Please join us for a fall ASFS Grounds Clean-up on Saturday, October 27th from 10:00am-12:00pm.  We'll be sprucing up our beautiful courtyard, supporting a number of Ms. Lin's projects, and much more. Come for as little or as long as you can - any and all help is appreciated, and kids (with parent supervision) are welcome too. Email Julie McGowan Flynn if you can help out. REFLECTIONS ARTS CONTEST: Heroes Around Me

The Reflections Contest is a national arts contest sponsored by the PTA. The theme for this year’s contest is "Heroes Around Me." All ASFS students are encouraged to enter; please see details in the attached flyer and student packet. Entries are due (along with the completed student packet) to the submission box in the ASFS Library by Tuesday, October 30th. Contact Michelle Brydges or Lynn Westwater with questions

No-Frills Fundraiser: October Update

A HUGE thank you to all of the families who have already generously contributed to the No-Frills Fundraiser. So far this year, 17% of ASFS families have generously donated $16k+. This, along with other fundraising programs, brings us to 22% of our overall fundraising goal for the 2018-19 school year. Nice job, ASFS families! 
 
We are not there yet though - our goal is 100% family participation. No donation is too small -- or too large!

Super Sibs Club

Super Sibs Club is a series of Sibshops – peer recreation and support sessions for students, grades 2-5, who have brothers or sisters with disabilities, special needs, and/or significant health issues. For the adults who run them and for the agencies that sponsor them, Sibshops are evidence of commitment to and concern for the family member who will have the longest-lasting relationship with a person who has a disability.  However, for the kids who attend them, Sibshops are lively, pedal-to-the-metal events where they will:

  • Meet other sibs (often for the first time);
  • Have fun;
  • Talk about the good and not-so-good parts of having a sib with special needs with others who “get it”;
  • Play some great games;
  • Learn how other brother and sisters handle sticky situations sometimes faced by brothers and sisters;
  • Laugh;
  • Learn about the services their brothers and sister receive; and
  • Have some more fun!

Sibshops are co-sponsored by the Arlington Public Schools Parent Resource Center (PRC), Arlington PRCR – Therapeutic Recreation, and Arlington SEPTA, and are held at The Langston Community Center, 2121 N. Culpeper Street, Arlington, VA 22207.

Registration is REQUIRED. Register online now, or contact the Parent Resource Center at prc@apsva.us or 703.228.7239. An optional, suggested donation of $5.00 to cover the costs of snacks and materials is appreciated. SEPTA is accepting donations via the online registration link. Parents may also bring checks made payable to Arlington SEPTA.
