PTA News: This Week at ASFS

Thank you for an amazing Back to School Picnic last Sunday! So great to see so many families enjoying burgers and hot dogs, Kona Ice, face painting, and games together. A huge thank you to Rabia Oubenadi and Julie Olcott for coordinating such a fun event, and to all of the volunteers for making it happen!

Thanks also to the parents who came to meet with our Arlington School Board liaison, Monique O'Grady, on Tuesday night and ask questions about the ASFS-Key School building swap. Take a look at the APS Updates pages on our website for more details. It's an important time to stay engaged and involved as we plan for the future of ASFS.

Coming up at ASFS, mark your calendar for our grade level parent coffee events - a chance to get your questions answered and meet with Ms. Begley, Ms. Jones, and a grade level teacher representative. Also see the ASFS Master Calendar for upcoming grade level social events, just another way to get together with fellow ASFS families and connect with new school friends!


ASFS PTA Directory Update

Thanks to all parents who have opted-in to the PTA Directory! As APS and ASFS work through a new system this year, we appreciate your patience and flexibility. In order to make sure we have complete and accurate data, we are targeting launch by the end of October. In the meantime, please make sure you have opted-in to the directory by doing at least one of the following:

In the meantime, we know how much parents want to be able to connect and communicate with each other.  Look for an email from your teacher(s) with the option to send your email address directly to room parents to help foster class distro lists. "Design the ASFS Stairs" Art Contest - Deadline extended to Wednesday, 9/26

Submit your child's design by Wednesday, 9/26! The ASFS School Grounds Committee is kicking off the school year with an art contest to beautify our stairs leading up to the blacktop. Interested artists should submit a drawing or design to the PTA Mailbox in the front office (Attn: Lindsey Englerth) by Wednesday, 9/26.  Please include: Child's Name, Grade, Parent Email Address, and any notes about or inspiration behind your entry. The winning design will be painted on the stairs in early October. Contact Lindsey Englerth with questions.

2nd Grade Social Event: Today! Friday, September 21st

REMINDER: APS Volunteer Requirements

Important Note: All ASFS volunteers, including field trip chaperones, MUST return a completed APS Volunteer Application and signed Confidentiality Agreement, and receive APS approval, in order to volunteer at ASFS and/or serve as a chaperone. Once approved, this clearance is valid for three years. Please visit Paige Prenger in the ASFS Front Office to turn in your forms or to confirm your status.

Thanks to our generous ASFS families, our No-Frills Fundraiser has already raised over $11,000! Thank you so much for your donations! What a great community we have, showing such amazing support for our school.

Odyssey of the Mind

Calling all those interested in joining the creative problem-solving competition that teaches students from kindergarten through college to use STEM, Teamwork and the Arts as tools to think beyond the box.  

Interested in learning more? Please join us at the Info Session just before the next PTA meeting, on Tuesday, October 2nd at 6:30pm in the School Library. Both parents and students are encouraged to attend.


Only 1 week left to order soccer jerseys

There is only one week left to place your ASFS soccer jersey order. ASFS soccer jerseys will NOT be ordered again this year. Soccer jerseys are ASFS gold with black piping and details. There is a design on the left pocket area, right sleeve an option to customize the jersey on the back with your child's first or last name. Orders will be place in the beginning of October. If you would like to place an order please complete the ASFS Soccer Jersey Order Form and send it in with payment to be placed in the PTA mailbox. ASFS Spirit Wear Update

As many of you have heard we have sold out of all of our new spirit wear. We were so excited to see all of the enthusiasm for the shirts. Please know we have placed an additional order to include yellow tie die shirts for the kids, more of the neon wicking shirts and brand new soft cotton male and female adult shirts. Box Tops Contest Underway

Find your scissors and raid your pantry.  It’s time to start looking for Box Tops for Education! Box Tops are the little pink certificates you find on everyday products like Cheerios (all Big G cereals), Annie’s, Ziploc, Hefty, Cascadian Farms, Larabars and many more. Each Box Top is worth ten cents, and if we all pull together it can add up to big bucks for our school. All at no extra cost to you. See a list of Box Top products.

Glue or tape your cut-out Box Tops to a “submission sheet” that came home last week. You can also collect Box Tops loose in a baggie. Either way, make sure your student’s teacher’s name is included, so your Box Tops count toward our contest. Send your collected Box Tops into school. There is a white box to put them in, right outside the Multipurpose Room.

We’re going to have one year-long contest this year. Every month I’ll let you know which class is in the lead. Your Box Tops can help your classroom win! First update coming in October. - Amy Hodges, Box Tops Chair


ASFS Food Bus

ASFS students have saved 1 TON of food and put it in the hands of those in need! Food Bus is a program that operates daily in our lunchroom. Rather than throw away uneaten, unopened, leftover food, the students store it in the Food Bus fridge. At the end of the week, a volunteer collects the food and delivers it to Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC). For more details, click here: ASFS Food Bus 2018

How You Can Help: Sign up below to make a weekly delivery! Whether one week or many weeks as fit into your schedule, you pick up the food from the ASFS Food Bus refrigerator, sort it into bins, and deliver the food to AFAC on a Friday afternoon. Help support a great program that reduces food waste and feeds the hungry in Arlington! Email Jackie Java with any questions.
