PTA News: This Week at ASFS

Great to see so many families at Back to School Night this week! Thanks to all the teachers and staff for hosting such an informative evening for ASFS parents.

Coming up this week: On Sunday, 9/16, hope you can join us for the Back to School Picnic - always a fun event for the whole family. And we still need helpers - sign up if you can lend a hand for an hour. On Tuesday, 9/18, come meet our Arlington School Board Liaison, Monique O'Grady, at 7pm in the library. Finally, mark your calendar for our upcoming grade level parent coffees, a chance to gather in the library at 9am for Q&A with Ms. Begley, Ms. Jones, and a teacher representative.

Also, remember to complete your Back to School Checklist as we kick off the school year - thank you for all of your support!

ALL ASFS FAMILIES ARE INVITED!

WHEN: Sunday, September 16, 2018 4:00-6:00pm

WHERE: ASFS Parking Lot & Field

WHAT TO BRING: Please bring a side dish to share! Don't forget your picnic blanket and chairs. Cash/checkbook (for PTA dues, no-frills donations, ASFS t-shirts and magnets). Canned goods and cereal to support AFAC.

Come join in the fun and bring the family! There will be music, face painting and games! Meet and mingle with other ASFS families. Burgers, hot dogs and popcorn will be provided. Kona Ice will be available for sale (proceed to support ASFS!)

    Opt-In to the ASFS PTA Directory

    New this year! Due to an updated VA law, in order to continue to receive PTA communications, including the Electronic Friday Folder (eFF) and Electric News, and to be included in the ASFS PTA Directory, ALL FAMILIES must opt-in to the PTA Directory! This is the primary way the PTA and ASFS parents may communicate with one another. (Note: You may set your preferences within the PTA Directory if you prefer not to display personal information.)

    Action Required: Please login to ParentVUE by Friday, September 14th & follow the instructions below to ensure you are included in the October 2018 ASFS PTA Directory launch.

    Note: You may also opt-in by returning the paper Release of Student Information Form you receive in your first day packet, or by registering directly on the PTA website.

    Important Note: All ASFS volunteers, including field trip chaperones, MUST return a completed APS Volunteer Application and signed Confidentiality Agreement, and receive APS approval, in order to volunteer at ASFS and/or serve as a chaperone. Once approved, this clearance is valid for three years. Please visit Paige Prenger in the ASFS Front Office to turn in your forms or to confirm your status.

    Sign Up Now! After-School Enrichment Class Registration

    Online registration will be open through Tuesday, September 18th! A lottery system will be used if there is more demand for a class than there is space available.

    APS Updates

    Last week, APS sent out more information related to the ASFS-Key building swap. We have included some important links and updates on the APS Updates page of our website. On September 18th, we will host Monique O'Grady, our School Board Liaison, in the ASFS library from 7:00-8:30pm for a Q&A (see details). In an effort to address all key topics within the time we have, please send your questions by Sunday, September 16th: Submit Question for Monique O'Grady.     ASFS Food Bus

    ASFS students have saved 1 TON of food and put it in the hands of those in need! Food Bus is a program that operates daily in our lunchroom. Rather than throw away uneaten, unopened, leftover food, the students store it in the Food Bus fridge. At the end of the week, a volunteer collects the food and delivers it to Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC). For more details, click here: ASFS Food Bus 2018

    How You Can Help: Sign up below to make a weekly delivery! Whether one week or many weeks as fit into your schedule, you pick up the food from the ASFS Food Bus refrigerator, sort it into bins, and deliver the food to AFAC on a Friday afternoon. Help support a great program that reduces food waste and feeds the hungry in Arlington! Email Jackie Java with any questions.

    Come Learn About the Scouts!

    Please join us on Thursday, September 20th from 6:30-7:30pm in the ASFS Multipurpose Room to learn about the Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts. Representatives from both organizations will be there to answer questions and provide information about how your child can become a Scout! See the flyer below for more details:

    "Design the ASFS Stairs" Art Contest - One More Week to Go!

    Submit your child's design by next Friday, September 21st! The ASFS School Grounds Committee is kicking off the school year with an art contest to beautify our stairs leading up to the blacktop. Interested artists should submit a drawing or design to the PTA Mailbox in the front office (Attn: Lindsey Englerth) by Friday, September 21st.  Please include: Child's Name, Grade, Parent Email Address, and any notes about or inspiration behind your entry. The winning submission will be selected the following week, and the final design painted on the stairs in early October. Contact Lindsey Englerth with questions - have fun designing!

    All eFF submissions must be received by Eveline Broderick by noon on Wednesday. All content will be subject to approval by ASFS administration and the PTA.
