PTA News: This Week at ASFS

Welcome to the first weekly Electronic Friday Folder (eFF) of the 2018-18 school year! Look for the weekly eFF in your inbox every Friday (and make sure you opt-in to the PTA Directory to continue to receive the eFF during the school year).

The first day of school is less than two weeks away! ASFS teachers, staff, PTA board members and committee leads have been working hard to get ready for another great year ahead. See below for lots of ways to meet new families and get involved - from the ASFS Lemonade Stand on Saturday, 8/25 to distributing school supply kits on Tuesday, 8/28 to the kindergarten playdate on Thursday, 8/30, hope to see many of you at these fun upcoming events.

Also, make sure you have Thursday, August 30th from 3:00-4:00pm on your calendar for the ASFS Open House. It is a great chance for your child to meet his/her teacher(s) and visit their classroom. Drop off your child(ren)'s school supplies, and stop by the PTA Welcome Table to buy your ASFS t-shirts, magnets, and cookbooks, join the PTA, learn about our new Buddy Program, and sign up to volunteer for the 2018-19 school year. Hope to see you there!

We need your help! The PTA relies on volunteers to make our programs and events a success - sign up below if you can lend a hand with any of these initiatives:

The ASFS PTA needs YOU! Please click below to sign up for ASFS volunteer opportunities throughout the 2018-19 school year.  Our goal is that all families volunteer for a minimum of two events/activities. Many of the volunteer positions take very little time, and it’s a great way to show support for the school and meet other ASFS families. Contact PTA Volunteer Coordinator Julie Olcott with any questions.

ASFS Family Buddy Program

We are excited to announce that we will be starting a new ASFS Buddy Program this year to connect new families with returning families. Getting started at a new school can be overwhelming. The goal of the ASFS Buddy Program is to ease that transition and help new families meet others, have a resource for questions, and just get better acquainted. This program promises to be a lot of fun, and not demanding, of your time. If you are a returning ASFS family interested in serving as a buddy, or if you are a new family and would like to sign up, please email Jennifer Bethel. See the ASFS Family Buddy Program Flyer below for complete details:

Feeling Green? We Need You!

The PTA’s Sustainability Committee is ready to help ASFS continue on its path to a healthier and more environmentally-friendly community. Our efforts to help ASFS students and families reduce waste and save energy can save us all time and money, and help our planet at the same time.

This year we plan to continue our popular “swaps” that allow students to pick up new-to-them Halloween costumes, coats, and sports equipment at no charge. Our families save money and de-clutter at the same time. We’ll also be looking for ways to reduce our school’s trash and improve air quality in the parking areas.

If you’d like to be a part of this team, please let us know.  Thank you!
Sustainability Committee Co-Chairs Sylvia Cacciato and Amy Hodges

Box Tops For Education: Easy, No-Cost Fundraising

Ready to help raise money for our school? Box Tops for Education are an easy way, and it costs you nothing extra.  Those little pink certificates on packages of Cheerios, Cascadian Farms, Nature Valley, Scott, Ziploc, Larabars, and more? Cut them out! Each one is worth ten cents for our school: List of All Products with Box Tops

After you cut out the Box Tops, glue or tape them to a “submission sheet,” like the one that’s coming home in backpacks in September, or just collect your Box Tops in a zip-top baggie or envelope. We’ll have classroom contests during the year, so keep an eye out for details.

***Alert!*** It’s "Bonus Box Tops Certificates" season!  When you’re at Costco, look for these certificates on products like Nature Valley, Annie’s, and Big G cereals.

Let me know if you have any questions.  Thank you, Amy Hodges

Register for ASA Soccer

If your child is interested in soccer, now is the time to play in the fall season! It is a great way for kids to get outside and make friends. The only required gear is shin-guards! Arlington Soccer Association provides the uniforms and practice balls.

We are also always looking for parents who might be interested in coaching, or even helping someone else coach. No "serious" soccer experience is necessary. We provide a new coach orientation, free training, AND weekly lesson plans! It is a unique chance to get to know your child and their friends in a new, fun setting. We will keep adding new teams through Labor Day.
